AsemconnectVietnam - In the 1st quarter of 2024, Vietnam's cashew exports reached about 147 thousand tonnes, worth $ 782 million, up 31.8% in volume and 20.5% in value.

In March 2024 alone, Vietnam's cashew exports reached 55 thousand tonnes, worth $ 289 million, up 106.8% in volume and 103.4% in value compared to February 2024.
According to estimates, Vietnam's average cashew export price will reach 5,248 USD/ton in March 2024, down 1.7% compared to February 2024 and down 11.6% compared to March 2023.
In the first quarter of 2024, Vietnam's average cashew export price is estimated to reach $ 5,329/tonne, down 8.6% compared to the same period in 2023.
Regarding type structure, in the first 2 months of 2024, Vietnam increased exports of most cashew types compared to the same period last year, except for WS/WB, SP, and DW cashews.
According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first 2 months of 2024, Vietnam mainly exports cashew nuts W320 and W240, the proportion accounts for 56.71% of the total amount of cashew nuts exported. Therefore, growth in W320 and W240 cashew exports has a positive impact on industry performance.
Low cashew output on harsh harmattan
Cashew farmers in the country have projected that output for the 2024 season that started in January will dip marginally owing to the harsh harmattan season experienced in major growing areas.They said the harsh harmattan season has affected cashew trees in major producing states at the most critical stages of production, resulting in the withering of flowers during the reproductive stage.Tola Faseru, president of the African Cashew Alliance (ACA), said there is going to be a slight decline in the country’s production owing to the harsh harmattan that comes with excessive heat that is not allowing flowers bud properly to produce the cashew fruits in major growing areas.
“However, the weather has supported the quality of the nuts, particularly in Oyo, Ogun, and Kogi. The quality of the Nigerian cashew has improved tremendously in recent years,” Faseru, who is also the commissioner for agriculture in Osun State, said.
According to him, work is ongoing to boost local production of cashews in the country, and farmers are currently supported to switch to the use of high-yield varieties while governments at the federal and state levels are making possible the availability of large areas suitable for the cultivation of the nuts.
Debo Thomas, chief executive of Hastom Nigeria – a cashew growing and exporting business, said production will be poor this year because of the excessive harmattan as flowers that were supposed to transform to fruits have all dried up in most trees in Ogbomosho – a top growing community of the nuts in Oyo.
Nigeria is the fourth largest grower of cashew nuts in Africa and sixth globally, with production estimated at 240,000 metric tonnes per annum.
Nigeria earned N194.2 billion in 2023 from cashew export, accounting for 15.61 percent of the country’s total agricultural exports, and 70 percent of the total nuts were exported to Vietnam, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Currently, the worldwide annual production of cashew nuts exceeds 35 lakh tonnes. Amongst the major contributors, India accounts for 7.5 lakh tonnes, Vietnam for 4 lakh tonnes, and several African countries collectively produce 12 lakh tonnes annually.
The global market for cashew nuts holds a value of $9.8 billion. Vietnam stands out as the largest exporter, with cashew nut exports worth $3.5 billion. Industry insiders indicate that the global market for cashew nuts is expanding at a rate of 4.5% per year.
Vietnam, India and the Netherlands rank as the top three exporting countries for cashew nuts. Notable quantities of cashew nuts are also exported by Germany, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, Belgium and the United States.
