In general, fruit and vegetable exports to most markets in the first 2 months of 2024 increased in turnover compared to the first 2 months of 2023.
Fruit and vegetable exports are estimated to reach nearly 1.25 billion USD in the first quarter of 2024
According to the preliminary estimates, in the first quarter of 2024 only, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly 1.25 billion USD, up by 27% over the same period of 2023.
Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that according to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, in March of 2024, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports reached 433 million USD, an increase of nearly 4% over the same period last year.
Totally in the first 3 months of this year, the country’s exports of fruit and vegetables reached 1.25 billion USD, up by 27% over the same period of 2023. This is the first time that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports have reached and exceeded 1 billion USD in the first quarter of a year. This showed that the fruit and vegetable industry has many growth prospects in the near future.
Vietnam's important vegetable consumption markets were still China, South Korea, America, Thailand, and Japan.
Regarding the results achieved, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), it was due to the contribution of off-season durian. Notably, Thailand increased its purchases of Vietnamese durians, helping this market rise to number 4 in Vietnam's fruit and vegetable imports.
The update figures at the end of February showed that, in the Top 10 fruit and vegetable export markets of Vietnam, Thailand grew very high at 125.9% over the same period last year, reaching 28.6 million USD, bringing the market share of Thailand increased from 2% to nearly 4%.
In addition, according to Mr. Nguyen, Thailand is very strong in tourism, many Chinese visitors come and they love to eat durian. However, Thai domestic durian is only available for about 4 months per year, while Vietnam has durian all year round, so they import durian to serve tourists.
Along with durian, the main export items of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are still dragon fruit, bananas and mangoes.
Fruit and vegetable export prospects in 2024
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen also said that the export prospects of the fruit and vegetable industry in 2024 will continue to have positive developments, especially from the Chinese market.
Notably, Vietnam has 14 agricultural products officially exported to this market, including durian, bird's nest, sweet potatoes, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, watermelon, banana, black jelly, mangosteen, lychee and passion fruit.
Along with that, China is increasing imports of processed fruit and vegetable products from Vietnam. This is a good opportunity for Vietnam to grow export turnover and increase the value of fruits and vegetables.
According to experts' estimates, fruit and vegetable exports in 2024 could grow by 15% to 20% compared to 2023. Thus, the export turnover of this product this year could reach a new record of 6.5 billion USD.
Previously, 2023 witnessed a strong growth in fruit and vegetable export turnover and achieved spectacular results of 5.6 billion USD, an increase of 66.67% compared to 2022 (equivalent to an increase in turnover of 2.24 billion USD).
In the opposite direction, fruit and vegetable imports in the first 3 months of the year were estimated to reach nearly 500 million USD, up by more than 19% over the same period last year.
