WIPO Director General vows support for Vietnam

 Thursday, March 23,2017

AsemconnectVietnam - Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Francis Gurry vowed to keep assisting Vietnam in intellectual property field at a meeting with Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien in Hanoi on March 22.

Gurry said the improved living standards in Asia, including Vietnam, would push cultural industry forward, hence the importance of the serious enforcement of intellectual property rights, copyright and related rights, as it will positively impacts the cultural industry and economic opportunities brought about by the sector.

On the occasion, the guest expressed his wish that Vietnam would consider joining several WIPO pacts, including the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled.

Minister Thien, for his part, informed the guest that the Vietnamese government approved a strategy on developing cultural industries until 2020 with a vision to 2030.

He assured that the Vietnamese concerned agencies will widely disseminate legal regulations on intellectual property, copyright and related rights to the public.

The minister wished that WIPO would continue providing support for Vietnam in the field, especially in the training of quality personnel.

Though Vietnam is yet to join the Beijing Treaty and Marrakesh Treaty, its Law on Intellectual Property contains terms similar to the two treaties.

The Vietnam Composers’ Association is the first organisation in the country to establish the Vietnam Centre for Protection of Music Copyright. The Association for Protection of Performing Artists in Vietnam and the Recording Industry Association of Vietnam were born later.
