Vietnam’s seafood exports and imports in first five months of 2019
Friday, June 28,2019AsemconnectVietnam - According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in the first five months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of seafood decreased slightly compared with the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the country’s imports of seafood in the first five months of this year increased year – on – year.
Vietnam’s seafood exports in first five months
Vietnam’s exports of seafood in the first 5 months of 2019 reached over 3.18 billion USD, down slightly by 0.8 per cent compared to the first 5 months of 2018.
According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, the country’s exports of seafood in the first 5 months of 2019 reached over 3.18 billion USD, down slightly by 0.8% compared to the first 5 months of 2018. In May of 2019 alone, the country’s exports of seafood reached 763.37 million USD, increased by 20.4 per cent compared to April of 2019 but slightly decreased by 0.3 per cent compared to May of 2018.
Leading seafood export markets in the first five months of 2019
Vietnam's seafood exports to Japan reached 553.26 million USD in the period, accounted for 17.4 per cent of the total seafood export turnover of the country, up by 11.3 per cent over the same period of 2018.
The second largest market was the US with 509.69 million USD, up by 3.8 per cent and accounted for 16 per cent of the total; to EU market reached 489.86 million USD, accounted for 15.4 per cent of the total and down by 11.8 per cent; to China - reached 381.83 million USD, accounted for 12 per cent of the total and down by 3.7 per cent; to South Korea reached 308.8 million USD, accounted for 9.7 per cent and down by 1.6 per cent. Meanwhile, the seafood exports to Southeast Asia accounted for 8.1 per cent of the total seafood export turnover of the whole country with 258.46 million USD, up by 0.8 per cent over the same period last year.
In the first 5 months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of seafood to the majority of markets increased in turnover over the same period last year. The exports to Ukraine increased by 73.1 per cent to 9.5 million dollars; to Iraq - increased 42.6 per cent to 5.14 million USD; to Brunei increased by 37.6 per cent to 0.9 million USD; to Mexico - increased by 24.3 per cent to 54.47 million USD.
However, the exports of seafood to Saudi Arabia dropped strongly by 98.8 per cent over the same period last year to only 0.17 million USD. Besides, some markets also fell sharply such as: Pakistan decreased 77%, reached 2.75 million USD; to Czech - decreased by 47.3 per cent to 1.54 million USD; to Colombia - dropped by 30.7 per cent to 18.56 million USD; to the Netherlands - fell by 28.8 per cent to 89.83 million USD.
Vietnam’s imports of seafood in the first five months of 2019
According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s imports of seafood increased for 3 consecutive months.
Specifically, the imports of seafood increased by 38.1 per cent in March of 2019; by 0.2 per cent in April of 2019 and by 13.7 per cent in May of 2019 to 168.93 million USD.
In the first 5 months of 2019. Vietnam’s seafood import value reached 729.69 million USD, up by 4.6 per cent compared to the same period of 2018.
Norway, India; China, Japan and Southeast Asia were the major markets that supply seafood to Vietnam; of which the imports from Norway - the leading market in May 2019 increased strongly by 88.3 per cent compared to April of 2019 and also increased by 77 per cent compared to May of 2018, reaching 24.81 million USD. The figure raised the turnover of the first 5 months to 91.42 million USD, accounting for 12.5 per cent of the total seafood import value of the whole country, up by 26.5 per cent over the same period of 2018.
Meanwhile, the imports from India - the second largest seafood import market of Vietnam in the first 5 months of the year dropped sharply by 42.2 per cent over the same period last year with 87.88 million USD, accounting for 12 per cent of the total. In May of 2019 alone, it increased by 13.7 per cent compared to April of 2019 but decreased by 33.9 per cent compared to May of 2018 with 23.26 million USD.
The imports of seafood from Southeast Asia market accounted for 10.9 per cent of the total seafood import turnover of the whole country, reaching 79.56 million USD, up by 54.6 per cent over the same period last year. Of which, the imports from Indonesia reached 49.83 million USD, from Thailand - 11.18 million USD, from Singapore 6.28 million USD, from the Philippines - 8.17 million USD, from Malaysia 2.78 million USD, and from Myanmar - 1.32 million USD.
The country’s imports of seafood from China in the first 5 months also increased strongly by 38.2 per cent, reaching 61.37 million USD, accounting for 8.4 per cent of the total. The imports from Japan reached 50.88 million USD, accounting for 7 per cent of the total and up by 20.9 per cent year – on - year.
Imports of seafood from several markets
In the first 5 months of this year, the imports of seafood into Vietnam from most markets increased in value compared to the same period of 2018; in which, the imports increased sharply from several markets such as: from the Philippines - increased by 127.3 per cent, reached 8.17 million USD; from Indonesia increased by 66.4 per cent to 49.83 million USD; from the U.S - increased by 85.9 per cent, reaching 38.48 million USD; from Myanmar - increased by 33.5 per cent, reaching 1.32 million USD.
In contrast, the imports plummeted from several import markets such as: from Poland fell by 26.2 per cent, reaching 2.63 million USD; from Chile - decreased by 18.3 per cent to 29.9 million USD; from South Korea fell by 15 per cent, reaching 28.72 million USD.
