Leading import markets of telephones in first four months of 2019

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, after a sharp decline in the first 2 months of 2019, the imports of mobile phones and components to Vietnam increased sharply again by 44.6 per cent in March and 6.5 per cent year – on – year in April of 2019, reaching 1.02 billion USD.
In the first 4 months of the year, the country’s imports of this commodity group reached 3.81 billion USD, down by 11 per cent compared to the same period last year, accounting for 4.9 per cent of the total import value of telephones and accessories of the whole country.
Vietnam imported phones mainly from China and South Korea. The imports from China accounted for 54 per cent of the total import turnover of mobile phones and components of the country, reaching nearly 2.06 billion USD, down by 19.7 per cent compared to the same period last year. In April of 2019 alone, the figure reached 615.03 million USD, increased by 19.9 per cent compared to March of 2019 and by 1.1 per cent compared to April of 2018.
Meanwhile, the imports of phones from South Korea accounted for 39.3 per cent, reaching nearly 1.5 billion USD, up by 0.4 per cent. Particularly in April of 2019, the imports of phones from this market reached 356.58 million USD, up by 5.8 per cent compared to March of 2019 and up by 19.8 per cent compared to the same month last year.
In addition to the above two main markets above, the country’s imports of phones from Hong Kong reached 32.06 million USD, up by 25.8 per cent; from Japan – reached 14.51 million USD, down strongly by 63.4 per cent over the same period last year; - from the U.S - decreased by 13 per cent to 1.62 million USD; from Taiwan - decreased by 79.1 per cent to 0.52 million USD; from Sweden - plummeted by 96.8 per cent, reaching 0.04 million USD.
The country’s exports of phones and accessories in April of 2019 reached 3.88 billion USD, down by 27.9 per cent compared to March of 2019. In the first four months of this year, the country’s exports of phones and accessories reached 16.01 billion USD, down slightly by 0.4 per cent compared to the same period of 2018. Thus, Vietnam has trade surplus of 12.2 billion USD in trade of phones and components, up by 3,5 per cent over the same period of 2018.
