 Sunday, January 21,2024

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2023, the export of cassava and cassava products reached 2.95 million tonnes, worth 1.3 billion USD, down 9.1% in volume and down 7.3% in value compared to 2022.

Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics from General Department of Customs as saying that in 2023, exports of cassava and cassava products reached 2.95 million tonnes, worth 1.3 billion USD, a decrease 9.1% in volume and down 7.3% in value compared to 2022.
In 2023, although export of cassava and cassava products decreased compared to 2022, this is still one of exported agricultural products worth over 1 billion USD.
For cassava products alone, in 2023, cassava exports reached 821,510 tonnes, worth 231.64 million USD, an increase of 8% in volume and an increase of 4.9% in value compared to 2022. An average price of exported cassava in 2023 was 282 USD/tonne, down 2.9% compared to 2022.
In 2023, an average export price of cassava and cassava products reached the highest level since 2018. Price of cassava and cassava products for export in 2023 reached 441.5 USD/tonne, up 2.1% compared to 2022.
In 2023, China still be Vietnam's largest consumer market for cassava and cassava products, accounting for 91.52% in volume and 90.99% in value of the country's total exports, reaching 2 7 million tons, worth 1.18 billion USD, down 9.3% in volume and down 7.7% in value compared to 2022. Average export price of cassava and cassava products from Vietnam to China in 2023 was at 438.9 USD/tonne, up 1.7% compared to 2022.
China's demand for cassava and cassava products has slowed down in recent months, affecting Vietnam's exports of this product.
From the beginning of January 2024 until now, the price of fresh cassava roots in the Central region and the North has continued to increase, pushing up production costs. Although purchase price of Chinese customers' cassava starch products by road (DAF) increased slightly, it did not meet expectations of Vietnamese cassava factories. Trend of increasing purchase price of cassava starch products from Chinese customers has not kept up with increase in selling price of Vietnamese cassava factories.
According to data from General Statistics Office, in 2023, the cassava area nationwide reached about 511.5 thousand hectares, down 18.8 thousand hectares compared to 2022; Average yield reached 204 tons/ha, an increase of about 3.6 tons/ha and the output is estimated at 10.43 million tons of fresh tubers, down about 196.3 thousand tons compared to 2022.
In 2023/24 cassava crop year, Thanh Hoa province planted over 10,700 hectares of cassava, down about 2,000 hectares compared to the previous crop year. The average yield is about 18-20 tons/ha. Thus, each year cassava output reached about 180,000-200,000 tons; while the output demand is about over 400,000 tons/year.
Therefore, in this year's cassava crop, cassava raw material areas in Thanh Hoa province can only meet about 50% of processing needs of factories. Due to rapid development of cassava leaf mosaic disease in recent years and low purchasing prices, cassava growing efficiency is not high. Therefore, cassava area in Thanh Hoa province is also gradually decreasing. This year, market is stable but cassava starch processing factories do not have enough raw materials for production activities.
