Over 70% of wheat imported from Australia

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 8 months of 2023, Vietnam’s imports of wheat reached nearly 3.15 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 1.11 billion USD, up by 9.2% in volume and 1.5% in turnover compared to the first 8 months of 2022.

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in August of 2023, the country imported 360,625 tonnes of wheat, equivalent to 114.95 million USD, the average price reached 318.8 USD/tonne, an increase of 8% in volume and an increase 3.5% of turnover compared to July of 2023 but the price decreased by 4.2%. In comparison to August of 2022, it also increased by 23.7% in volume, but decreased by 1.2% in turnover and 20.2% in price.
Overall, in the first 8 months of 2023, the country's imports of wheat reached nearly 3.15 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 1.11 billion USD, an increase of 9.2% in volume, an increase of 1.5% in turnover compared to the first 8 months of 2022, the average price reached 352.3 USD/tonne, down by 7%.
In August of 2023, wheat imports from the main market Australia decreased by 52% in volume and 54.3% in turnover compared to July of 2023, the price also decreased by 4.7%, reaching 157,831 tonnes, equivalent to 49.84 million USD, the price 315.8 USD/tonne. In comparison to August of 2022, the country’s imports of wheat from Australia also decreased by 45.3% in volume, 56.7% in turnover and 20.8% in price. For the entire eight months of 2023, wheat imports from the Australian market accounted for 72.6% of the total volume and 71% of the country's total wheat import turnover, reaching nearly 2.28 million tonnes, equivalent to 786.88 million USD, the average price was 344.7 USD/tonne, up by 8.8% in volume, but down by 1.9% in turnover and down by 9.8% in price compared to the first 8 months of 2022.
Behind the main market of Australia is the US market, accounting for 8.2% of the total volume and 9.2% of the total turnover, reaching 259,291 tons, equivalent to 102.24 million USD, average price of 394.3 USD/ tons, up 100.6% in volume, up 73.3% in turnover but down 13.6% in price compared to the first 8 months of 2022.
The next was the Brazilian market with 261,611 tonnes, equivalent to 95.82 million USD, the price reached 366.3 USD/tonne, down by 19% in volume, down by 14.9% in turnover but up by 5% in price compared to the first 8 months of 2022, accounting for over 8% of the country's total wheat import volume and turnover.
Wheat imports from the Canadian market reached 166,961 tonnes, equivalent to 69.3 million USD, a sharp increase of 2,751% in volume and 2,357% in turnover compared to the first 8 months of 2022.
