 Monday, September 18,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - On Monday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged at VND70,500 to VND73,500 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.vn.

In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the maximum price for pepper stayed at VND72,500 per kg, while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price to VND70,000 per kg. Farmers in Binh Phuoc sold pepper for VND72,000 per kilogram, in Dong Nai province for VND70,500 per kilogram, and in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces for VND71,000 per kilogram.
In the first 8 months of 2023, Vietnam's pepper exports reached about 184,000 tonnes, worth of 600 million USD, up by 14.5% in volume, but down by 15.9% in value over the same period last year.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in the eight-month period, its member companies recorded a 15.3% drop in export volume, with 117,153 tonnes, or 62.4% of the market share. The exports of non-VPSA enterprises accounted for 37.6% of the market share and increased 185.4% year-on-year.
Although India is the homeland of pepper, Vietnam is the world's largest producer and exporter. The Southeast Asian nation has six key pepper producing provinces, namely Binh Phuoc, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Dong Nai and Gia Lai. Vietnamese pepper is currently present in more than 100 countries and territories.
Vietnam outpaces some other pepper producers such as Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and Cambodia thanks to advantages from the E.U.-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). The import tax on ground or crushed pepper exported to the E.U. decreased from 4% to zero. In addition, Vietnam's pepper industry is also appreciated for its processing capacity with processed products making up about 30% of total export turnover.
Vietnam's pepper exports in 2022 reached 226,000 tonnes, worth $963 million, down 13.3% in volume but up 2.7% in value compared to 2021, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
