China - Vietnam's largest export market for cassava and cassava products

 Monday, August 21,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In July of 2023, Vietnam’s exports of cassava and cassava products continued to decline over the same period last year. China was still Vietnam's largest cassava export market.

The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) quoted the statistics figures from the General Department of Customs as saying that, in July of 2023, Vietnam exported 145,230 tonnes of cassava and cassava products, worth of 71.88 million USD, up by 2.8% in volume and by 9.8% in value compared to June of 2023.
However, in comparison to July of 2022, the figure still decreased by 24.2% in volume and decreased by 17.2% in value. This was the 5th consecutive month of decrease compared to the same period of 2022.
The average export price of cassava and cassava products was at 494.9 USD/tonne, up by 6.9% compared to June of 2023 and up by 9.2% compared to July of 2022.
Totally in the first 7 months of 2023, the country’s exports of cassava and cassava products reached 1.64 million tonnes, worth of 665.57 million USD, down by 14.4% in volume and by 20.8% in value compared to same period of 2022.
In July of 2023, China was still the largest export market of Vietnam's cassava and cassava products, accounting for 93.61% of the country's total cassava exports with 135,960 tonnes, worth of 66.58 million USD, up by 13.3% in volume and 20.2% in value compared with June of 2023. However, in comparison to July of 2022, it still decreased by 22.9% in volume and decreased by 16.4% in value.
Totally in the first 7 months of 2023, Vietnam exported to China 1.47 million tonnes of cassava and cassava products, worth of 589.27 million USD, down by 15.9% in volume and down by 23.2 % in value over the same period of 2022.
In general, in the first 7 months of 2023, although the amount of cassava exports decreased, the exports of cassava and cassava products to several markets still grew well in both volume and value compared to the same period of 2022, such as: Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, etc. However, these markets only accounted for a small proportion of Vietnam's total export of cassava and cassava products.
In the coming time, it is forecast that China's demand for cassava and tapioca starch will be active again when the country enters the mooncake production season.
In the domestic market, from the beginning of August of 2023 until now, the price of fresh cassava tubers in Tay Ninh decreased slightly, the price of cassava starch also decreased according to the decreasing trend of raw material prices. Due to the weak domestic consumption of cassava chips, inventories are mainly offered for export.
As of early August of 2023, there were only a few tapioca starch factories in the Central Highlands running again, but the supply of cassava is not much due to the young cassava roots.
As the new cassava crop is late and the supply of raw materials is reduced, Vietnam's cassava starch exports in 2023 may only reach about 1.8 million tonnes, a sharp decrease compared to 2.4 million tonnes of the year 2022. Cassava starch began to be cleared again through Na Hinh border gate (Lang Son), the transaction of cassava starch in Mong Cai was gloomy.
Cambodia is accelerating the progress of cassava harvesting at the beginning of the season to sell to Vietnam due to the high price, which may cause a sharp drop in the production of cassava harvested in the middle and late stages of the season.
