Vietnam's total coffee exports within the first nine months of the 2022–2023 crop year (from October 2022 to September 2023) reached 1.44 million tonnes or over 24 million bags of coffee. Accordingly, the total export turnover reached 3.38 billion USD. This is an increase of 2% in volume and 6.6% in turnover over the same period in 2022.
Exxelsa and processed coffee were the highlights of Vietnam's impressive coffee exports in the first half of 2023. Namely, 890 tons of Excelsa coffee were exported for a total turnover 2.2 million USD in the first five months of the year. Consequently, this is an increase of 30.9% in volume and 27.5% in value compared to the same period in 2022.
However, the strong growth of Excelsa coffee has had little impact on Vietnam's coffee exports due to its relatively modest output and export value. On the other hand, the substantial increase in processed coffee export continues to have a positive impact on Vietnam's overall coffee exports.
The export turnover of processed coffee reached 71 million USD in May 2023, which is an increase of 30.5% compared to May 2022. As a result, this figure brought the export turnover of Vietnamese coffee in the first five months of the year to 310 million USD, which is an increase of 19% compared to May 2022. same period and 290% compared to the export turnover of Arabica coffee. Among the four types of coffee that Vietnam exports, processed coffee is currently only second to Robusta coffee in terms of popularity.
Vietnam's capacity for processed coffee has rapidly expanded in response to the rising demand on the global market in recent years. According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), Vietnam currently houses six instant coffee factories and seventeen blended coffee factories, with a total processing capacity of approximately 220,000 tons per year.
