US became largest export market of Vietnamese pepper in June

AsemconnectVietnam - In June, the United States became the largest export market of Vietnamese pepper. However, in the first 6 months of 2023, China was still the No. 1 market

According to the preliminary statistics figures of Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), in June of 2023, Vietnam exported 21,209 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, in which, black pepper reached 18,545 tonnes, white pepper reached 2,664 tonnes.
The total export turnover reached 77.1 million USD, of which, black pepper reached 63.8 million USD, white pepper reached 13.3 million USD.
The average export price of black pepper in June reached 3,440 USD/tonne, of which white pepper reached 4,975 USD/tonne, down by 100 USD from the previous month, for black pepper and 48 USD for white pepper compared to the previous month.
The United States became the largest export market of Vietnam's pepper in June, reaching 4,801 tonnes, but down by 11.2% compared to May.
The exports to China also plummeted by 59% to 4,200 tonnes. The exports to Germany, Netherlands, UAE, France, Russia, etc. decreased but increased in South Korea, UK, and India.
In general, in the first 6 months of the year, Vietnam exported 152,986 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, of which black pepper reached 138,377 tonnes, white pepper reached 14,609 tonnes. The total export turnover reached 485.9 million USD, of which black pepper reached 417.9 million USD, white pepper reached 68.0 million USD. In comparison to the same period last year, the export volume increased by 21.8%, equivalent to 27,433 tonnes, but the export turnover decreased by 14.6%, equivalent to a decrease of 82.3 million USD.
The average export price of black pepper in the first 6 months of 2023 reached 3,484 USD/tonne, white pepper reached 5,011 USD/tonne, down by 879 USD for black pepper and 1,070 USD for white pepper, respectively.
China was Vietnam's largest pepper export market in the first 6 months of 2023, reaching 50,369 tonnes, accounting for 32.9% of export market share and increasing by 798.0% over the same period last year.
In the whole Asia region, the exports increased by 60.2% and accounted for 58.3% of export market share. However, the exports to some traditional markets dropped sharply such as India down by 41.1%, UAE down by 29.3%; Pakistan fell by 25.9%; and South Korea fell by 54.2%.
The exports to the US market reached 25,894 tonnes, accounting for 16.9% of export market share and down by 14% compared to the same period last year.
In the European region, the exports decreased by 10% to 26,963 tonnes, of which most of the traditional markets decreased, such as Germany down by 30.4%; Netherlands down by 22.3%; Britain fell by 12.9%, and Ireland fell by 66.1%.
However, also in the EU market, exports to some countries increased sharply such as Turkey, up by 102.2%; and France up by 31.2%.
The exports to Africa reached 7,843 tonnes, up by 7.1%, of which Egypt was led by 51.1%, reaching 2,485 tonnes; followed by Senegal with an increase of 77.4% to 1,763 tonnes.
The top white pepper import markets were China (2,261 tonnes); United States (2,002 tonnes); Germany (1,715 tonnes), the Netherlands (1,300 tonnes), and Thailand (1,176 tonnes).
In the opposite direction, according to the preliminary statistics of VPA, in June of 2023, Vietnam imported 2,584 tonnes of pepper, of which black pepper reached 2,505 tonnes, white pepper reached 79 tonnes, the total import turnover reached 7.8 million USD, increased by 11.6% in volume compared to the previous month.
In the first 6 months of 2023, Vietnam imported 15,083 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, of which black pepper reached 14,115 tonnes, white pepper reached 968 tonnes. In comparison with the same period in 2022, the import volume decreased by 29.2%, equivalent to 6,216 tonnes, of which black pepper decreased by 21.8% and white pepper decreased by 70.3%.
