Vietnam’s CPI and CPI in Hanoi and HCM in first half of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) in the first six months of this year increased 3.29% year on year, while core inflation was estimated to rise by 4.74%, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, General Director of the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Ms. Huong said that in June alone, the country’s CPI rose by 0.27% over that of May and by 2% over the same period last year, mostly due to an increase in the electricity retail prices. In the month, rise was seen in the prices of 10 groups of goods, led by food and catering services at 0.57%. Only post and telecommunications saw a decrease in prices, she said.
In the second quarter of this year, Vietnam’s CPI was up by 2.41% year on year, with a strong rise in prices of construction materials at 6.03% and education at 5.81%. In the period, the fall was recorded in prices of two groups – post and telecommunications (decreased by 0.47%) and transport (decreased by 8.34%).
In the first half of 2023, education-related prices rose by 7.95% year on year, while the prices of housing and construction materials also increased by 6.6%.
The upturn was also seen in the prices of cultural, entertainment and tourism services at 3.47% due to high demands after the COVID-19 pandemic was controlled, along with prices of food and foodstuff at 3.6% due to an increase in demands during the festive season in the beginning of the year.
The 3% increase in electricity prices from May 4 also pushed the prices of the product in the people's daily life consumption by 3.12%, contributing 0.1 percentage point to the CPI rise in the first six months of this year.
Meanwhile, several factors contributing to the slowing down of the CPI rise in the January-June period, including the fall in the prices of fuels and post and telecommunication services.
According to the GSO, core inflation in June increased by 0.24% over May and by 4.33% compared to the same period last year, pushing the inflation rate in the first six months of this year to 4.74%.
Hanoi: consumer price index in June increased by 0.11% compared to the previous month
According to the Hanoi Statistics Office, the consumer price index (CPI) in June increased by 0.11% over the previous month. The figure increased by 0.07% compared to December of 2022 and decreased by 0.23% over the same period last year. The average CPI in the first 6 months increased by 1.22% compared to the average of the same period of 2022.
In June, there were 9/11 groups of CPI products that increased compared to the previous month, of which food and catering services increased by 0.53% (the impact of increasing the overall CPI by 0.16%); cultural, entertainment and tourism groups increased by 0.78% (the impact of increasing CPI in general by 0.04%); equipment, household appliances increased by 0.15%; beverages, tobacco increased by 0.14%; traffic increased by 0.10%; apparel, hats and footwear increased by 0.07%; education increased by 0.03%; medicine and health services increased by 0.02%.
In June, 2/11 groups of CPI products decreased compared to the previous month, including housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials decreased by 0.71% (the impact of reducing the overall CPI by 0.14%); post and telecommunications decreased by 0.07%.
On average, in the second quarter of 2023, CPI increased by 0.20% compared to the same period last year, of which 6/11 groups of goods had an increase in CPI. Food and catering services; beverages, tobacco; apparel, hats, shoes; appliances, household appliances; medicines and medical services; other goods and services, etc. , while the CPI of the group of culture, entertainment and tourism was equivalent to the second quarter of 2022.
There were 4/11 groups of goods with the average CPI in the second quarter of this year decreased compared to the average of the same period, traffic decreased by 6.61%; education decreased by 5.94%; housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials down by 0.55%; post and telecommunications decreased by 0.4%.
On average, in the first 6 months of 2023, CPI in Hanoi increased by 1.22% compared to the average of the same period last year.
According to the Hanoi People's Committee, from now to the end of the year, one of Hanoi's top priorities is to continue to focus on ensuring stable economic growth in the capital, controlling inflation; as well as to continue to consolidate and promote growth drivers. Accordingly, well control prices, markets, prevent and combat smuggling and commercial fraud; ensure the balance of supply - demand, especially the balance of gasoline, oil and essential products for production and consumption; consistently aim to control price index below 4.5%.
HCM City's CPI increased by 0.17% in June
Ho Chi Minh City’s consumer price index (CPI) edged up 0.17% in June with eight out of 11 groups and services recording an increase in prices, according to the municipal Statistics Office.
The restaurant and catering services registered a rise of 0.51% with food was up by 0.11% due to a hike in prices of corn, cassava, potatoes and some processed foods.
The price of foodstuffs increased by 0.37% in the month, with the growth seen in various products, such as pork (increased by 1.05%), poultry meat (increased by 0.45%) and fresh, dried and processed vegetables (increased by 1.23%).
The group of beverages and tobacco increased by 0.31% while the group of garments and footwear went up by 0.18%.
The upturn was also seen in the prices of housing, electricity, water supply, fuel and construction materials as well as transport group at 0.13%.
Meanwhile, the post and telecommunications group showed a decrease of 1.24% compared to the previous month mainly due to a drop in selling prices of phones and accessories.
The price of drugs and medical services group remains unchanged.
The average CPI in the first six months of 2023 in the city rose by 3.73% compared to the average of the same period of 2022.
According to the city’s Statistics Office, the gold price index in June went down by 0.16% and the US dollar price index increased by 0.11% compared to the previous month.
