Exports and imports of petroleum in May and the first 5 months of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 5 months of 2023, the country’s total exports of petroleum reached 933,033 tonnes, worth of 794.5 million USD, up by 10.7% in volume and down by 5.8% in value.

Meanwhile, the country’s total imports of petroleum reached 4,170,208 tonnes, worth of 3.4 billion USD, down by 32 USD/tonne, down by 0.4% in volume and 18.7% in turnover compared with the same period of 2022.
Vietnam’s exports of petroleum in May and the first five months of 2023
Vietnam's petroleum exports in May of 2023 increased by 4.5% in volume and 0.3% in turnover compared to the previous month, reaching 193,672 tonnes, worth of 154.2 million USD, showed the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
Totally, in the first 5 months of 2023, the country’s total exports of petroleum reached 933,033 tonnes, worth of 794.5 million USD, up by 10.7% in volume and down by 5.8% in value.
Leading petroleum export markets in the first five months of 2023
Cambodia was still Vietnam's largest petroleum export market, in the first 5 months of 2023, reaching 263,240 tonnes, worth of 226.8 million USD, up by 1.08% in volume and down by 31.5% in value over the same period last year, accounting for more than 28% of total export volume and turnover. In May of 2023 alone, the figure reached 49,093 tonnes, worth of 37.9 million USD, down by 9.2% in volume and 17.6% in value.
The South Korean market accounted for 8-9% of the total volume and total turnover, reaching 78,773 tonnes, with a turnover of 75.9 million USD, up by 46.4% in volume and 50.2% in value. In May of 2023 alone, the figure reached 11,119 tonnes, worth of 9.8 million USD.
The petroleum exports to the Chinese market accounted for more than 7-8% of the total volume and turnover, reaching 69,762 tonnes, with a turnover of 66.8 million USD, up by 116.6% in volume and up by 113.5% in value in the first 5 months of 2023. In May of 2023, the country’s exports of petroleum to China increased by 37.4% in volume and 31.4% in value.
The Singapore market followed, accounting for 11.2% of total volume and 7.3% of total turnover, reaching 104,958 tonnes, with a turnover of 58.3 million USD, up by 56.9% in volume and 14.6% in value. In May of 2023 alone, the figure reached 25,615 tonnes, worth of 13.5 million USD.
The other markets included Laos, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Thailand, accounting for a small proportion of exports, less than 4% of the total volume and total turnover.

Vietnam’s petroleum imports in May of 2023 increased by 36.4% in volume and 20.8% in turnover compared to the previous month, reaching 910,442 tonnes, valued at 645.3 million USD, showed the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
Totally in the first 5 months of 2023, the country’s total imports of petroleum reached 4,170,208 tonnes, worth of 3.4 billion USD, down by 32 USD/tonne, down by 0.4% in volume and 18.7% in turnover compared with the same period of 2022.
Leading petroleum import markets in May and the first five months of 2023
Vietnam imported the most petroleum from South Korea in the first 5 months of 2023, accounting for 39-40% of the total import volume and turnover, reaching 1,675,004 tonnes, worth of 1.35 billion USD, down by 3.7 % in volume and 24.6% in turnover over the same period of 2022. In May of 2023, the country’s petroleum imports increased by 93.5% in volume and 73.4% in turnover compared to April of 2023, reaching 416,020 tonnes, worth of 289.8 million USD.
Singapore followed, accounting for more than 25% of the total import volume and turnover in the first 5 months of 2023, reaching 1,056,588 tonnes, worth of 881.3 million USD, up by 86.4% in volume and 51.8% in turnover. In May of 2023 alone, the country’s imports of petroleum from Singapore reached 230,929 tonnes, worth of 176.5 million USD, up by 12% in volume and 7.6% in value.
The next was the Malaysian market. In the first 5 months of 2023, the country’s imports of petroleum from Malaysia accounted for more than 15% of the total import volume and turnover, down by 5% in volume and 15.7% in turnover, reaching 665,199 tonnes, worth of 515, 7 million USD. In May of 2023 alone, the country’s imports of petroleum from this market increased by 61.6% in volume and 25% in turnover.
The next was the Chinese market. In the first 5 months of 2023, the country’s imports of petroleum from China accounted for more than 9% of the total import volume and turnover.
