Vietnam’s exports and imports of seafood in May and first 5 months of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 5 months of 2023, Vietnam’s exports of seafood products reached nearly 3.38 billion USD, down by 28.2% compared to the first 5 months of 2022.

Meanwhile, the country’s seafood import turnover of all kinds in the first 5 months of 2023 reached over 1.05 billion USD, up by 6.6% compared to the first 5 months of 2022.
Vietnam’s exports of seafood in May and the first five months of 2023
Vietnam’s seafood exports in May of 2023 continued to increase by 8.9% compared to April of 2023 but decreased by 23.8% compared to May of 2022, reaching nearly 809.46 million USD, showed the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
In general, in the first 5 months of 2023, the exports of this group of goods reached nearly 3.38 billion USD, down by 28.2% compared to the first 5 months of 2022.
Leading seafood export markets in May and the first five months of 2023
Japanese market was leading the list of the country’s main seafood export markets, accounted for 17.2% of the total export turnover of this commodity group of the country, reaching over 580.28 million USD, down by 9.2% compared to the first 5 months of 2022. In May of 2023 alone, the country’s exports of seafood to Japan reached 136.79 million USD, up by 12.3% compared to April of 2023 but down by 8% compared to May of 2022.
The US market ranked second in terms of turnover, accounting for 16.7%, reaching nearly 562.52 million USD, a sharp decrease of 48.7%. In May of 2023 alone, the exports to this market reached 150.89 million USD, up by 17.3% compared to April of 2023 but sharply decreased 38.6% compared to May of 2022.
The next was the Chinese market. In May of 2023, the country’s exports of seafood to China increased by 19.7% compared to April of 2023 but decreased by 12.3% compared to May of 2022, reaching 150.27 million USD. In total, in the first 5 months of 2023, the exports of seafood to this market decreased by 26.8% compared to the first 5 months of 2022, reaching over 512.69 million USD, accounting for 15.2% of the total export turnover of this commodity group.
Seafood exports to the FTA RCEP markets in the first 5 months of 2023 decreased by 18.4% compared to the first 5 months of 2022, reaching over 1.78 billion USD, accounting for 52.8% of the total turnover; while the exports to the FTA CPTTP market decreased by 21.4%, reaching over 193.29 million USD, accounting for 27%. The exports to the Southeast Asian market accounted for 8.1% of the total turnover, reaching over 273.28 million USD, down by 11.8%.

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs,
Particularly in May of 2023, the import turnover of this group of products reached over 195.71 million USD, up by 1.1% compared to April of 2023 but down by 14.6% compared to May of 2022.
Leading seafood import markets in May and the first five months of 2023
In the first 5 months of 2023, India, Norway, Indonesia, China and Japan were the main markets supplying seafood to Vietnam; in which the imports from India lead in turnover, reaching 151.9 million USD, accounting for 14.5% of the total import turnover of this commodity group of the whole country, a sharp increase of 24.2% compared to the first 5 months of 2022. In May of 2023 alone, the imports from this market reached 20.74 million USD, down by 8.7% compared to April of 2023 and sharply down by 43.7% compared to May of 2022.
In second place was the Norwegian market, the imports from this market in May of 2023 decreased by 11.5% compared to April of 2023 and decreased by 0.5% compared to May of 2022, reaching 21.68 million USD, bringing the total import turnover in the first 5 months of 2023 to 116.07 million USD, accounting for over 11%, up by 18.7% compared to the first 5 months of 2022.
The imports from Chinese market reached 90.27 million USD in the first 5 months of 2023, accounting for 8.6%, up by 4.1%; from Indonesia reached 85.38 million USD, accounting for 8.1%, down by 3%; and from Chile reached 65.79 million USD, accounting for 6.3%, a sharp increase of 92.6%.
In general, in the first 5 months of 2023, seafood import turnover from main markets increased over the same period last year.
