District betters lychee quality to increase exports

 Monday, June 12,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - The northern province of Hai Duong’s Thanh Ha District, which is renowned for lychee, has accomplished procedures to maintain 11 packing house codes (PHCs) and applied for an additional three PHCs. This is among the district’s efforts to promote its high quality lychee exports to China.

The district began harvesting early-ripening lychees in the latter half of May and is expected to harvest in-season lychee gardens in mid-June.
Vice Chairman of the Thanh Ha District People’s Committee Hoang Thi Thuy Ha said Thanh Ha is home to 3,265 hectares of lychee, including 1,700ha of early-ripening lychee. About 400ha has met VietGAP standards and 50ha GlobaGAP. The district is expected to produce an additional 200ha of lychee in accordance with GAP standards this year.
The district houses 45 lychee farming zones provided with 168 production unit codes (PUC), including 45 PUCs for exports to China, 40 PUCs for exports to Australia, 36 PUCs for exports to Japan, 39 PUCs for exports to the US, and eight PUCs for sales to Thailand.
Thanh Ha is expected to have a bumper lychee crop this year with an estimated output of 40,000 tonnes, including 25,000 tonnes of early-ripening lychee and 15,000 tonnes of in-season lychee, Ha said.
The district’s vice chair added China remains the biggest buyer of Thanh Ha lychees, followed by the domestic market. The district will continue improving its lychee quality to promote exports to Japan, the US, the Netherlands, Australia, and Thailand.
Tran Van Hao, Director of the Hai Duong Provincial Department of Industry and Trade said lychee sales, including exports, especially those to China, will face many challenges as this neighboring market has higher and stricter requirements for agricultural imports. The department has been working hard to find and expand export markets, including potential and discerning ones to help farmers and businesses increase sales, Hao added.
To Ngoc Son, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Asia-Africa Market Department said the ministry has been accompanying Hai Duong Province in general and Thanh Ha District in particular in promoting domestic sales and export of farm produce, including lychee. The Chinese market has stricter standards so Thanh Ha farmers need to improve their lychee quality to meet this market’s regulations.
Thanh Ha District has recommended export lychee purchasers to invest in the produce processing, packaging, preservation and classification to improve product quality and appearance.
