Vietnam fruit market update: Export of fruits, vegetables sweeter by the day

 Friday, June 2,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - The export of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables is expected to continue to soar, considering a growth of 39% since early this year and strong increases in China's purchases.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), fruits and vegetables brought home 600 million USD from exports in May, bringing the five-month figure to 1.97 billion USD, up 39% annually.
In the first four months of this year, China remained the top consumer of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables with a market share of 58.7%, reaching a value of 804.6 million USD, up 30% year-on-year. The Netherlands posted the highest growth, 72%, in the import value of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables.
Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit & Vegetables Association Dang Phuc Nguyen said it is the first year following nearly three years of COVID-19 that China has actively increased its purchase of Vietnamese farm produce such as dragon fruit, durian, mango, and jackfruit, among others.
Lychee harvest in Central Highlands a success
Vietnam’s lychee production has been supplemented this year by nearly 15,000 tonnes from Central Highlands’ provinces, thanks to their harvest taking place a month before northern localities do likewise.
This year’s lychee production nationwide has been boosted by nearly 15,000 tonnes of fruit from provinces in the Central Highlands, which were harvested a month earlier than in the northern region. This has attracted many traders who export the fruit to China.
The lychee varieties grown in the Central Highlands are the same as those in the northern province of Bac Giang, but they have only recently been able to earn higher economic value due to crop restructuring practices over the past three years.
Despite the modest growing area and output compared to coffee and pepper, the lychee industry has contributed to poverty alleviation in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.
Fruit, farm produce week underway in Hanoi
A wide range of fruits and other agricultural specialties from various localities are being offered at Vincom Plaza Long Bien shopping mall in Hanoi within the framework of a fruit and farm produce week that opened on May 24 to stimulate demand.
Acting Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade Tran Thi Phuong Lan said the fair is expected to stimulate domestic consumption, increase the total retail sales of goods and effectively implement regional linkage activities and support promotion and connection of goods supply and demand between Hanoi and other localities.
The fair gathers more than 130 booths of over 80 enterprises and cooperatives of Hanoi and 18 participating cities and provinces.
Vietnamese durian gets more farming area codes, enabling increased exports to China
Vietnamese durians will receive 47 additional farming area codes and 18 packaging facility codes from China, enabling more export of the fruit to that country. Farming area codes enable traceability and thus agricultural exports. China, the world's largest durian market, began importing the fruit from Vietnam last year, after approving 51 farming area codes. The number has since increased to 293, along with 115 packaging facility codes.
According to data from the General Department of Customs, durian has been identified as the fruit with the highest economic value for Vietnam. Its exports in the first quarter were worth US$153 million, 8.3 times up from the same period last year, of which China accounting for 83 per cent.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit Association, said the fact that more farming area codes and packaging facility codes had been approved by China was good news for durian growers and exporters.
