 Thursday, May 25,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s broken rice (locally known as com tam) was chosen the second place among the top 100 most tasty rice dishes in Asia by TasteAtlas, the home of local food, traditional restaurants, and authentic recipes, in March this year.

This traditional dish of Vietnam is cooked from broken rice, once considered food for the poor. Still, nowadays, it has become a special popular dish in the country, particularly in Hanoi and HCM City, TasteAtlas said, noting that Japanese sushi ranked first.
A friend of mine, Chiam Jia Xine from Malaysia, said during his recent trip to Hanoi, he was interested in not only bun cha (vermicelli with grilled pork and fresh herbs) and rau muong xao (fried morning glory with garlic) but also broken rice.
Export of rice posts highest growth among key agricultural products
Rice exports in April 2023 were estimated at 1.1 million tonnes with a value of 573.9 million USD, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported.
The April figures have brought the total volume and value of rice exports in the first four months of the year to 2.95 million tonnes with 1.56 billion USD, up 43.6% in volume and 54.5% in value over the same period in 2022. This is the highest growth rate among key agricultural product groups.
Some other agricultural products also posted higher export value than the same period last year such as vegetables and fruits (up 19.4%), cashew nuts (3.4%) and coffee (2.5%).

Farmers in Vietnam's southern tip, Ca Mau Province, are busy harvesting the last winter-spring rice crop in the early days of May. They harvested more than 1.5 million hectares of winter-spring rice crop; thus, the province’s rice output topped over 10 million rice tons.
The province has supplied the rice to exporters that sell about 2.5 million tons of rice, bringing in nearly US$1.3 billion to the country, up 33.7 percent in quantity and 44.55 percent in value over the same period last year.
Furthermore, in the first months of 2023, the average export price of rice reached $531 per ton, up 9.2 percent against that in 2022.
The achievement can be obtained thanks to the diligence of millions of farmers in the Mekong Delta who have cherished each grain of rice or heavenly pearl, each blade of straw.
Long An province will have 120,000 hectares of high-quality rice by 2030
The project of sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality specialized rice in association with green growth in Mekong Delta region aims to form a concentrated, large and stable commodity raw material area, creating favorable conditions for the reorganization of rice production in the Mekong Delta region towards modernity, meeting multi-purposes. Participating in the project, the province registered for an area of 120,000 hectares.
The project sets the common goal of forming a high-quality rice-growing area with a production system organized along a value chain, applying sustainability standards to adapt to climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; improving the efficiency of production system, business and income of rice growers, ensuring national food security; stabilizing society and improving the quality and reputation of Vietnamese rice products in the world market.

The Prime Minister has directed the Ministry of Finance to take nearly 500 tons of rice from the national reserves to assist the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak in providing food for people during the between-crop period.
The Prime Minister has directed the Ministry of Finance to take nearly 500 tons of rice from the national reserves to assist the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak in providing food for people during the between-crop period. Drought causes damage to rice production in M'Drak district. Accordingly, the Prime Minister asked the provincial People’s Committee to use the amount of rice adequately.
Due to the long-term drought, there has been a serious decline in the productivity of agricultural production, especially rice, bringing difficulties to the lives of people, especially the poor and ethnic minority families in remote areas. There are currently over 8,700 families with over 32,800 people facing hunger.
