DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices decreased by 500 VND on May 23

 Tuesday, May 23,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - On Tuesday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands decreased by 500 VND to VND73,000 – 76,000 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.vn.

In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the maximum price for pepper fell to VND76,000 per kg, while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price was at VND73,000 per kg. Farmers in Binh Phuoc sold pepper for VND75,500 per kilogram, in Dong Nai province for VND73,500 per kilogram, and in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces for VND74,500 per kilogram.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association, in April 2023, Vietnam exported 26,291 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, of which 23,760 tonnes of black pepper and 2,531 tonnes of white pepper. In the first 4 months of 2023, Vietnam exported 103,018 tonnes of pepper. Exports to China's main pepper market reached 35,914 tonnes.
Notably, exports to Asia increased by 77%, accounting for 60.2% of the market share, of which China continues to be the main export market of Vietnamese pepper with 35,914 tonnes, accounting for more than 30% of Vietnam's export pepper output.
Experts say that if there is an El Nino in the second half of 2023, the commodity markets will skyrocket, which Vietnam's main agricultural products such as coffee and pepper will benefit in terms of selling prices.
Currently, Vietnam ranks number one in terms of global pepper exports. Vietnam has an advantage over some other pepper-producing countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia... thanks to the advantages of the EVFTA agreements. Specifically, the import tax on ground or crushed pepper exported to the EU is reduced from 4% to 0%. Besides, Vietnam's pepper industry is also highly appreciated for its processing capacity with the proportion of processed goods currently accounting for about 30% of total export turnover.
However, the driving force behind the sharp increase in pepper prices was the attraction of the Chinese market.
