Exports of several farm products in March and first quarter of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first three months of this year, Vietnam's rice exports reached 1.79 million tons, valued at 952 million USD, down by 19.3% in volume but up by 30.2% in value over the same period of 2022.

Also in the first 3 months of this year, Vietnam's coffee exports reached 552,610 tonnes, worth of approximately 1.23 billion USD, down by 5.0% in volume and by 5.4% in value compared to same period of 2022.
Meanwhile, Vietnam's pepper exports reached approximately 76,200 tonnes, worth of 233.45 million USD, down by 6.0% in volume and by 34.3% in value over the same period of 2022.
Vietnam's rubber exports in the first quarter of 2023 reached 381,780 tonnes, worth of 531.3 million USD, down by 6.1% in volume and by 25.7% in value over the same period of 2022.
Rice exports in March and the first 3 months of 2023
The data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development showed that, rice exports in March of 2023 reached 900,000 tonnes, worth of 480 million, bringing the results of rice exports in the first three months of 2023 to 1.79 million tonnes and 952 million USD.
The total exports of rice of the country in the first quarter of 2023 decreased by 19.3% in volume but increased by 30.2% in value over the same period of 2022.
The average export price of rice in the first three months of 2023 was estimated at 531USD/tonne, up by 9.2% over the same period of 2022. This is the highest average export price of rice in the past 10 years.
The Philippines, China, and Indonesia were the three largest export markets of the country in the first quarter of 2023. Notably, Indonesia has become the market with the highest increase in rice export value in the first quarter of 2023, increasing 3.06 times compared to the first quarter of 2022.
In the first quarter of the year, the country’s rice exports to China increased by 86% in volume and 120% in value over the same period of 2022. Especially, the average price of rice exported to China in the first three months of the year reached of 589 USD/tonne, an increase of more than 18% compared to the same period last year.
Coffee exports in March and the first 3 months of 2023
The Import-Export Department (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) quoted the statistics figures from the General Department of Customs as saying that in March of 2023, Vietnam's coffee exports reached 210,370 tonnes, worth of 482.43 million USD, an increase 5.2% in volume and 10.9% in value compared to February of 2023.
In comparison with March of 2022, the figure decreased by 0.3% in volume, but increased by 1.7% in value.
In the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam's coffee exports reached 552,610 tonnes, worth of approximately 1.23 billion USD, down by 5.0% in volume and 5.4% in value over the same period of 2022.
In March of 2023 only, the average export price of Vietnam's coffee reached 2,293 USD per tonne, up by 5.5% compared to February of 2023 and up by 2.0% compared to March of 2022. However, in the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam's average coffee export price reached 2,222 USD per ton, down by 0.3% over the same period of 2022.
In March of 2023, coffee exports to Belgium, Spain, Japan and the Netherlands decreased compared to March of 2022, however, the exports to some markets grew from 2 to 3 digits, including: Indonesia, Russia, Algeria, the United States. In general, in the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam's coffee exports to most markets increased, except for Belgium, Spain, Japan, and the Netherlands. Notably, coffee exports to Indonesia and Algeria recorded a 3-digit growth rate compared to the first quarter of 2022.
The strongest export growth in March of 2023 recorded by the Russian market with a value of 30.7 million USD, up by 418% over the same period last year. By the end of the first quarter of 2023, coffee exports to Russia increased by more than 76% over the same period of 2022. Currently, Russia is one of the four largest customers of Vietnamese coffee exports.
Indonesia followed with export turnover in March of 2023 reaching nearly 18 million USD, an increase of nearly 363% compared to March of 2022. By the end of the first quarter of 2023, coffee exports to this market earned nearly 39.3 million USD, up by 209% over the same period last year.
The value of coffee exports to Algeria in March reached nearly 17 million USD, up by 184.5 percent compared to March of 2022. In the first quarter of 2023, coffee exports to this market reached nearly 40.1 million USD, up by 126.8 percent over the same period last year.
In March, the country’s export turnover to the U.S market reached more than 34.5 million USD, up by 34.7% in value over the same period last year. In general, in the first quarter of 2023, export turnover to this market reached more than 86 million USD, up by 26.9% in value over the same period last year.
In the first quarter of 2023, businesses exported 220,749 tonnes of coffee to the EU market with a value of 473.7 million USD, down by 8.2% in volume and 10.4% in value compared to the same period last year. With this result, the EU continued to be Vietnam's largest coffee export market, accounting for nearly 40% of total exports.
Pepper exports in March and the first 3 months of 2023
In March of this year, Vietnam's pepper exports recorded high growth in both volume and value.
The statistics figures of the General Department of Customs showed that, Vietnam's pepper exports in March of 2023 reached approximately 35,750 tonnes, worth of 106.47 million USD, up by 27.6% in volume and up by 26.5% in value compared to February of 2023. In comparison to March of 2022, the figure increased by 50.6% in volume, but decreased by 4.7% in value.
In the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam's pepper exports reached approximately 76,200 tonnes, worth of 233.45 million USD, down by 6.0% in volume and by 34.3% in value over the same period of 2022.
Regarding export prices, in March of 2023, the average export price of Vietnam's pepper reached 2,978 USD/tonne, down by 0.9% compared to February of 2023 and down by 36.7% compared to March of 2022. In the first quarter of this year, the average export price of Vietnam's pepper reached 3,064 USD/tonne, down by 34.3% over the same period of 2022.
The country’s pepper exports to the US, United Arab Emirates, India, Germany, Netherlands, UK markets in March of this year decreased compared to the same period of 2022. In contrast, pepper exports to other markets, such as Singapore, Turkey, and Egypt grew by 3 to 4 digits.
Generally, in the first quarter, pepper exports to the US, Germany, Netherlands and UK markets decreased compared to the same period of 2023. In contrast, pepper exports to the United Arab Emirates, Philippines, Turkey, Egypt, etc. increased sharply.
According to the Import-Export Department (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade), it is forecasted that Vietnam's pepper exports will be more active in the second quarter thanks to high demand from China, Papua New Guinea, ASEAN, and Turkey offset the still quiet import demand of the US and EU markets.
Vietnam’s exports of rubber in March and the first 3 months of 2023
In the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam’s rubber exports reached 381,780 tonnes, worth of 531.3 million USD, down by 6.1% in volume and by 25.7% in value over the same period of 2022.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade, citing the statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, assessed that in March of 2023, Vietnam exported 115,900 tonnes of rubber, worth of 163.92 million USD, down by 11.6% in volume and down by 11.4% in value compared to February of 2023. In comparison with March of 2022, the figure increased by 3.1% in volume, but decreased by 19% in value.
In the first 3 months of 2023, Vietnam’s rubber exports reached 381,780 tonnes, worth of 531.3 million USD, down by 6.1% in volume and by 25.7% in value over the same period of 2022.
China was still the largest market for Vietnam's rubber consumption in March, accounting for 74.9% of the country's total rubber exports, with 86,810 tonnes, worth of 119.86 million USD, down by 12.1% in volume and 11.6% in value compared to February of 2023. In comparison to March of 2022, the country’s rubber exports increased by 24.4% in volume, but decreased by 1.9% in value.
The average export price of rubber to China was at 1,381 USD/tonne, up by 0.6% compared to February of 2023, but down by 23.3% compared to March of 2022. Totally in the first 3 months of 2023, Vietnam exported to China 292,610 tonnes of rubber, worth of 397 million USD, up by 4.4% in volume, but down by 17.8% in value over the same period of 2022.
Besides, in the first 3 months of 2023, rubber exports to most markets decreased compared to the same period last year, however, the exports to several markets, such as Russia, the Netherlands, and Malaysia still grew well in both volume and value compared to the same period of 2022.
For the European market in general, there is still a lot of room for the rubber industry because based on export results in 2022, the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) assessed that Vietnam's rubber market share is shrinking in the EU market, while the rubber market share of Thailand and Coast Ivory increased compared to 2021.
Vietnam still ranked 4th among ASEAN countries in terms of rubber market share in the EU. In the EU market, industry, production, and consumption are growing strongly (production of aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, equipment and machinery for manufacturing, healthcare, consumer goods). EU consumption demand for rubber and rubber products is very large, especially high-grade rubber (SVR CV) and SVR 10, SVR 20 categories, which are forecasted to have many export opportunities to the EU in the following years.
