In terms of market, in April 2024, India was the main export market for Vietnamese star anise with 1,033 tonnes, accounting for 69.8% of the proportion and increasing by 60% compared to the previous month.
Accumulated in the first 4 months of the year, Vietnam exported 3,915 tonnes of star anise with a total turnover of 20.3 million USD, however, down 21.1% in volume and 34.6% in turnover.
Leading exporters include Prosi Thang Long with 823 tonnes, Nedspice Vietnam with 235 tonnes, Tuan Minh 199 tonnes, Hong Son Vietnam with 154 tonnes and Senspices Vietnam with 148 tonnes.
Star anise is a small tree 2-6m high, shape of the whole tree is tapered in shape of a canarium, green all year round, the trunk grows straight, the branches easily break. Leaves grow in clusters of 3-4 at the ends of branches, have stems, whole leaf blades, 8-12cm long, 3-4cm wide, fragrant when crushed. Star anise plants, if planted and cared for well, will flower after 4 years of planting. Star anise plants usually flower from March, May, to July and in September, star anise flowers begin to ripen and people can harvest them.
Normally, a star anise tree must be 5 years or more old before it can harvest its fruit. Each year, it can only be harvested twice, so the rare star anise is even more precious. Yield from the 5th to 6th year is 0.5 -1 kg/tree. From the 20th year onwards, the tree will yield a stable yield of up to 40 - 50kg/tree. If star anise trees are planted and cared for properly, they will yield high and stable yields, extending the harvest period up to 80 years. Vietnam has an star anise growing area of about 40,000 hectares, concentrated mainly in Lang Son and Cao Bang with an annual output of more than 16,000 tonnes.
