Fruit and vegetable exports estimated at 3.1 billion USD in 11 months of 2022
Wednesday, December 7,2022AsemconnectVietnam - In the 11 months of 2022, Vietnam’s export value of vegetables and fruits was estimated at 3.1 billion USD, of which, the exports of vegetables and fruits to the Chinese market has prospered.
The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) quoted data from the General Department of Customs as saying that it was estimated that the export value of Vietnam's vegetables and fruits in November of 2022 reached 340 million USD, up by 9.8% over the previous month and increased by 30.5% compared to November of 2021. In the first 11 months of 2022, the export value of vegetables and fruits was estimated at 3.1 billion USD, down by 4.9% over the same period of 2021.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - said that in the 11 months of 2022, the exports of many kinds of fruit and vegetable increased.
Notably, durian, dragon fruit, banana, etc. have been exported to the Chinese market thanks to the Protocols signed between Vietnam and China. In particular, Vietnamese bananas surpassed the Philippines for the first time in terms of exports to China. Recently, the two sides signed a Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for Vietnamese sweet potatoes imported into China, which will open up opportunities for export in this market.
Commenting on the Chinese market for fruit and vegetable consumption at the end of the year and the Lunar New Year, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen assessed that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable market is still heavily influenced by the Chinese market. Annually, export turnover to the Chinese market accounts for 50%. Chinese culture is quite similar to that of Vietnam, so the demand for vegetables and fruits for Tet will be high to serve spiritual culture. This will affect the price and quantity consumed.
“Last year, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, China's "Zezo Covid" policy had a great influence on producers and traders of agricultural products in Vietnam. This year, China has relaxed the "Zezo Covid" policy, so the situation will improve. There may still be congestion at the border, but not as much as last year," Nguyen said.
Mr. Le Thanh Hoa - Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) - said that during Tet, the demand for fresh fruit of the Chinese market still accounts for more than 50% of fresh fruit exports of Vietnam.
According to Mr. Hoa, the domestic and export market demand for fruit is quite large at the end of the year. Currently, the export must be associated with the growing area and the packing facility; each growing area is associated with the output and area, if something is done incorrectly or borrowed the code of the growing area, the code of the packing base will greatly affect the export.
According to experts, the strong shift from unofficial to official export for the Chinese market will contribute to promoting the positive growth of the fruit and vegetable industry.
According to the Import and Export Department, the prospect of exporting this type of fruit is very large, because the main consumer market of this type of Vietnam is China, which has a large import demand to meet the needs of a market with more than 1.4 billion people with increasing income levels.
Every year, China imports more than 15 billion USD of fruit and vegetable products. Many businesses expect that, with the opening of a series of Vietnamese fruits exported to China, it will be the driving force to promote fruit exports in 2023.
According to a forecast from Global Market Insights, the Covid-19 pandemic shows that the supply chain of fresh perishable food is only suitable for domestic consumption, while processed foods that can be preserved for a long time should better meet the requirements of international consumers. The world market for processed fruits and vegetables is forecast to reach about 392 billion USD by 2025.
Therefore, the Import-Export Department recommends businesses to focus on the segment of processed products, because this is the trend of the market in the coming time. In particular, in the current context, businesses need to be persistent to maintain the market and always ensure food quality and safety, because this is a vital factor for us to keep the market.
