SEA Games 31: Vietnam tops medal tally, exceeding gold medal target

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam remained on top of the ongoing SEA Games 31, earning additional 27 gold medals on May 19 and surpassing its initial target of winning 140-150 at the event.

 As of 9pm of the same day, the host nation had bagged 152 gold, 76 silver and 74 bronze medals, followed by Thailand with 53 golds and the Philippines with 37. On the day, three golds came for Vietnam in athletics, two each in shooting and canoeing, and one each in chess, billiards, and cycling, among others.
Both the women’s and men’s football teams of Vietnam have qualified for the finals, where they will face their Thai rivals on May 21 and 22, respectively.
Vietnam clinch silver in women’s triples of petanque
Vietnam bagged the silver medal in the women’s triples of petanque at the ongoing SEA Games 31 on May 19, the last competition day of the sport.
Cambodia won the gold after beating the hosts 13-11 at the final, while Laos and Thailand claimed the bronze medal.
Thailand were gold medallists in the men’s triples event, after a 13-1 victory over Cambodia at the final.
The Vietnamese petanque team brought home one gold, three silver and three bronze medals at SEA Games 31.
SEA Games 31, themed “For a Stronger South East Asia”, is being held in Hanoi and 11 neighbouring provinces and cities until May 23.
Thai players advance to women's table tennis final
Suthasini Sawettabut and Orawan Paranang of Thailand won their semi-final matches of the SEA Games 31 women's table tennis single event on March 20 to enter the upcoming final. In her match, Suthasini won 4-0 against Ho Ying of Malaysia. Meanwhile, Orawan secured the last ticket to the final by defeating Zeng Jian of Singapore 4-3.
On the afternoon of May 20, in the men’s single event, Vietnamese players Nguyen Anh Tu and Nguyen Duc Tuan are scheduled play semi-finals against their rivals from Thailand and Singapore.
Singaporean sets record in men’s 50m freestyle
Singapore’s Teong Tzen Wei on May 19 set a record in Southeast Asia in the men’s 50m freestyle swimming after finishing first at a time of 21.93 seconds at the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) in Vietnam’s Hanoi capital.
Earlier, Teong also broke the SEA Games record in the men’s 50m butterfly.
On the last competition day of swimming at SEA Games 31 – May 19, Singapore secured four gold medals, raising the total to 21. This result helped the country rank first in the medal table of the sport.
Thai weightlifter wins gold in women’s 49kg
With a total lift of 195kg, Thailand’s Khambao Surodchana won the gold medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at SEA Games 31 on May 19. As the strongest contender, Surodchana successfully lifted 88kg in the snatch and 107kg in the clean and jerk to top the category. Pham Dinh Thi of Vietnam earned silver with a total lift of 183kg (80kg in the snatch and 103kg in the clean and jerk), which was much better than her performance at previous tournaments. The bronze medal went to Amis Ramos Rosegie of the Philippines with 179kg in total.
Gold medal for Vietnam in men’s indoor handball
Vietnam has defeated Singapore in the second-leg match of the men’s indoor handball at SEA Game 31 to secure the gold medal.
At the end of the first half of their match on May 19, the Vietnamese team won 15-9 against Singapore.
Entering the second half, Vietnamese athletes took full advantage of their opportunities to end the match with a score of 34-19.
With this result, Vietnam won the absolute victory after three matches, hence the early gold. Meanwhile, Singapore will have to make great efforts in their upcoming match with Thailand, vying for the silver medal.
Vietnamese archers win four silver, one bronze medals in total
Vietnamese archers have concluded their competitions at the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) with four silver and one bronze medals. On the last competition day on May 19, Le Phuong Thao failed to defeat her Singaporean rival and only won a silver medal in women’s single three-string bow event. Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Hai Chau lost the bronze medal to Singaporean archer Madeleine Ong Xue Li in the same event.In the men’s single three-string bow event, Nguyen Van Day returned empty-handed after losing to his Malaysian competitor.
Vietnam exceeds gold medal target in taekwondo
Pham Thi Thu Hien secured one more gold medal for the Vietnamese taekwondo team in the final of the women’s under-62kg Kyorugi event at the ongoing 31st SEA Games on May 19.
Sasikarn Tongchan of Thailand got the silver in the event.
In other competitions the same day, Pham Minh Bao Kha of Vietnam won one silver medal in the men’s 80kg Kyorugi event, while Vu Thi Dung brought home a bronze medal in the women’s 49kg category. After the four day of competition at SEA Games 31, Vietnamese taekwondo athletes pocketed nine gold medals, far exceeding the target.
