Vietnam-Malaysia trade exchange in four months of 2025
Wednesday, May 28,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - Malaysia is Vietnam's 20th largest export market globally and its 5th largest in the ASEAN region, after Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia.
According to the data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in April of 2025, Vietnam's exports to Malaysia reached a turnover of 484.8 million USD, a decrease of 0.6% compared to the previous month. Overall, in the first four months of 2025, the country’s exports of goods to Malaysia reached USD 1.7 billion, an increase of 3.6% compared to the same period last year.
Vietnam's leading commodities exported to Malaysia include machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts; computers, electronic products and components; telephones and components; and iron and steel of all kinds.
The leading commodity exported to Malaysia in the first four months of 2025 was computers, electronic products and components, reaching 303.4 million USD, an increase of 85.9%, accounting for 17.6% of the total export proportion. This was followed by iron and steel of all kinds, reaching 151.1 million USD, a decrease of 28.2%, accounting for 8.7% of the proportion. Some commodities saw increase in export turnover compared to the same period last year, such as coffee, up by 60.9%; vehicles and spare parts, up by 69.2%; fertilizers of all kinds, up by 70.7%; and petroleum products of all kinds, up by 103.6%.
According to experts, Malaysia continues to be an important trade partner in the ASEAN region. The growth signals in electronics, agricultural products, and vehicles indicate that the export capacity and competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises are improving, especially in the context of post-pandemic economic recovery and the effective utilization of free trade agreements such as the CPTPP and RCEP.
In the near future, there is still significant potential to boost bilateral trade between Vietnam and Malaysia, especially given that both sides are striving to capitalize on opportunities from regional trade agreements they both participate in, such as RCEP and CPTPP. This is a solid foundation for promoting the continuous development of trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia in the future.
The trade structure between the two countries also demonstrates diversity. Vietnam mainly exports goods such as machinery, electronic equipment, and agricultural products. Conversely, Vietnam imports many high-tech goods and production materials from Malaysia. This not only contributes to Vietnam's economic development but also creates favorable conditions for Malaysia to access Vietnam's large market.
