Exports and imports of iron and steel in first half of 2018

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in the first six months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of iron and steel increased sharply, while the imports of iron and steel increased slightly.

Over US$ 2.11 billion earned from exports of iron and steel
Vietnam’s exports of iron and steel in the first six months of this year increased sharply by 38.3 per cent in quantity and 54.8 per cent in value over the same period last year to 2.81 million tons worth of US$2.11 billion, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.

In June of 2018, the country’s exports of iron and steel decreased by 2.1 per cent in quantity and 1.4 per cent in value over the previous month to 452,513 tons worth of $349.63 million. The figure was up by 22.8 per cent in quantity and 42 per cent in value over the same month of 2017.

The leading iron and steel export markets of Vietnam in the first six months of this year were Cambodia with 595,760 tons worth of $383.76 million, up by 50 per cent in quantity and 78.4 per cent in value year – on – year; the U.S– 439,087 tons worth of $375.63 million, up by 75.2 per cent in quantity and 83.5 per cent in value.

The exports of iron and steel of all kinds to Malaysia reached 335,337 tons worth of $228 million, up by 88 per cent in quantity and 106.3 per cent in value; to Indonesia – 333,975 tons worth of $263.31 million, up by 25.8 per cent in quantity and 35.9 per cent in value;

In the first six months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of iron and steel to Ukraine rocketed by 356.5 per cent in quantity and 602 per cent in value to 105 tons worth of $0.15 million; to Italy – up by 423 per cent in quantity and 376 per cent in value to 48,542 tons worth of $48.48 million; to Japan – up by 685.5 per cent in quantity and 350.8 per cent in value to 42,148 tons worth of $33.08 million; to Belgium – up by 241 per cent in quantity and 214 per cent in value to 155,717 tons worth of $118.9 million.

However, the exports of iron and steel to Switzerland were down by 99.5 per cent in quantity and 97.4 per cent in value to 22 tons worth of $ 0.05 million; to Saudi Arabia – down by 64.3 per cent in quantity and 61.3 per cent in value to 1,962 tons worth of $1.37 million; to Pakistan – down by 54.7 per cent in quantity and 43.8 per cent in value to 14,852 tons worth of $8.85 million.

Imports of iron and steel increased slightly in first half of 2018
Vietnam imported 6.88 million tons of iron and steel worth of US$4.93 billion in the first six months of this year, decreased by 12.9 per cent in quantity but increased by 6.4 per cent in value compared with the same period last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.

In June, the country’s imports of iron and steel reached 1.21 million tons worth of $878.56 million, down by over 14 per cent in quantity and 14 per cent in value compared with the previous month.
China was the country’s leading iron and steel import market in the first six months of this year with 3.25 million tons worth of $ 2.32 billion, down by 17.6 per cent in quantity but up by 4.5 per cent in value year – on – year and accounted for 47 per cent of the total.

Meanwhile, the imports of iron and steel from Japan accounted for 16 per cent of the total with 1.12 million tons worth of $780.91 million, up by 0.9 per cent in quantity and 16.6 per cent in value; from South Korea - 0.9 million tons worth of $725.01 million, up by 7.7 per cent in quantity and 21.6 per cent in value; from Taiwan (CN) – up by 6.5 per cent in quantity and 26.6 per cent in value to 0.77 million tons worth of $505.74 million; from Denmark – up by 11.7 times in quantity and 3.3 times in value to 552 tons worth of $0.42 million.

In the first six months of this year, Vietnam’s imports of iron and steel from Russia increased sharply by 88.5 per cent in quantity and 117.1 per cent in value to 251.1 tons worth of $141.28 million; from Austria – up by 80.2 per cent in quantity and 296.1 per cent in value to 645 tons worth of $4.28 million; to the U.S – up by 78.2 per cent in quantity and 46.6 per cent in value to 8,466 tons worth of $9.57 million; and from Canada – up by 72.2 per cent in quantity and 49.2 per cent in value to 496 tons worth of $0.3 million.

However, the imports of iron and steel from Ukraine fell sharply by 93.8 per cent in quantity and 85.8 per cent in value compared with the same period last year to 21 tons worth of $0.03 million; from Poland – down by 83.6 per cent in quantity and 82.8 per cent in value; from India – down by 69.2 per cent in quantity and 61.5 per cent in value; from Mexico – down by 72.4 per cent in quantity and 77.8 per cent in value.
