Imports and exports: both saw growth

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 4 months of 2018, the country’s exports of goods increased by 19.2 per cent or US$ 11.89 billion compared with the same period last year, the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs showed.

Also in the period, the imports of goods increased by 9.5 per cent or US$ 6.06 billion over the same period last year.
Telephones and components were the biggest export item in the period and it saw sharp increase. It was followed by computers, electronics and components; footwear of all kinds; and machines, equipment and spare parts.

The export figures of the leading items were as followed:

Telephones and components: Vietnam exported $ 3.48 billion worth of telephones and components in April and $ 16.08 billion in the first 4 months of this year, up by 32.5 per cent compared with the same period of 2017.
The main export markets of telephones and components in the period were EU (28 countries) with over $ 4.56 billion, up by 28 per cent year – on – year; China with $ 1.79 billion, up by 5.2 times; and the U.S - $ 1.71 billion, up by 23.5 per cent.

Computers, electronic products and components: Vietnam earned $ 2.15 billion from export of computers, electronic products and components in April of 2018, down by 4.5 per cent compared with the previous month. The figure brought the country’s total exports of computers, electronics and components in the first 4 months of this year to over $ 8.48 billion, increased by 12.8 per cent compared with the same months of 2017.
The major export markets of computers, electronic products and components in the period were China with $ 2.35 billion, up by 28.4 per cent year – on – year; the E.U - $ 1.58 billion, up by 12 per cent; South Korea - $ 884 million, up by 53.9 per cent.

Footwear of all kinds: The export of footwear of all kinds reached $ 2.12 billion in April and $ 8.53 billion in the first 4 months of this year, up by 14.5 per cent or $ 1.08 billion year – on - year.
The country’s top export markets of footwear of all kinds in the first 4 months of this year were the U.S with $ 4.06 billion, up by 12.2 per cent year – on – year; Japan - $ 1.12 billion, up by 19.2 per cent; and EU –$ 1.11 billion, up by 19.2 per cent.

Machines, equipment, tools and spare parts: : The country earned nearly $ 1.36 billion from exports of machines, equipment, tools and spare parts in April and $ 5.03 billion in the first 4 months of this year, up by 30.7 per cent over the same period last year.
The main export markets of machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts in the first 4 months of this year were the U.S with $ 842 million, up by 3.6 per cent year – on – year; to the EU (28 countries) – $ 724 million, up by 47.3 per cent; and to India - $ 710 million, up by 7 times compared with the same period of 2017.

Footwear of all kinds: The export of footwear of all kinds reached $ 1.26 billion in April and $ 4.7 billion in the first 4 months of this year, up by 10 per cent year – on - year.
The country’s top export markets of footwear of all kinds in the first 4 months of this year were the U.S with $ 1.76 billion, up by 16.4 per cent year – on – year; the E.U (28 countries) - $ 1.34 million, down by 1.1 per cent; China –$ 422 million, up by 36.8 per cent.

Wood and furniture: The country’s exports of wood and furniture hit $ 693 million in April, down by 4.4 per cent month – on – month. The figure brought the country’s total export of wood and furniture in the first 4 months of this year to $ 2.64 billion, up by 9.8 per cent year – on - year.
In the first 4 months, the country’s exports of wood and furniture to the U.S reached $ 1.05 billion, up by 9.7 per cent; to China - $ 367 million, up by 3 per cent; and to Japan - $ 351 million, up by 2.2 per cent year – on - year.

Seafood: The country’s export of seafood hit $ 684 million in April, down by 2.6 per cent month – on – month. The figure brought the country’s total export of seafood in the first 4 months of this year to $ 2.45 billion, up by 14.3 per cent year – on - year.
In the first 4 months of this year, the country’s export of seafood to EU reached $ 434 million, up by 25 per cent; the U.S – $ 378 million, up by 5.7 per cent; to Japan – $ 376 million, up by 5.4 per cent over the same period last year.

Means of transport and spare parts: The country’s exports of means of transport and spare parts hit $ 627 million in April, down by 13.1 per cent month – on – month. The figure brought the country’s total export of means of transport and spare parts in the first 4 months of this year to $ 2.65 billion, up by 19.5 per cent year – on - year.
In the first 4 months, the country’s export of means of transport and spare parts to Japan reached $ 756 million, up by 14.5 per cent; to the U.S - $ 359 million, up by 13.8 per cent; and to Singapore - $ 154 million, up by 2.3 times over the same period last year.

Iron and steel of all kinds: Vietnam’s exports of iron and steel of all kinds hit 482,000 tons worth of $ 370 million, down by 7.2 in quantity and 5.2 per cent in value compared with the previous month. The figure of the first 4 months of this year was 1.91 million tons worth of $ 1.41 million, up by 43.6 per cent in quantity and 61.7 per cent in value.
The major export markets of iron and steel of all kinds in the first 4 months of this year were Cambodia with 374,000 tons worth of $ 238 million, up by 43.8 per cent in quantity and 66.6 per cent in value; the U.S – 290,000 tons worth of $ 244 million, up by 115 per cent in quantity and 123.7 per cent in value; Indonesia – nearly 265,000 tons worth of $ 208 million, up by 33 per cent in quantity and 43.9 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.

Coffee: The country’s export of coffee hit 156,000 tons worth of $ 298 million in April, down by 22.2 per cent in quantity and 23.1 per cent month – on – month. The figure brought the country’s total export of coffee in the first 4 months of this year to 685,000 tons wroth of nearly $ 1.33 billion, up by 17 per cent in quantity and down by 0.3 per cent in value year – on - year.
In the first 4 months of this year, the country’s exports of coffee to EU (28 countries) reached 282,000 tons worth of over $ 528 million, up by 1.7 per cent in quantity but down by 14 per cent in value; to the U.S – nearly 77,000 tons worth of over $ 147 million, down by 15.2 per cent in quantity and 28.3 per cent in value; to Indonesia – 51,000 tons worth of $ 98 million, up by 11.9 times in quantity and 9.4 times in value over the same period last year.

The imports of leading items in the first four months of 2018
In the first 4 months of 2018, Vietnam’s import value of computers, electronics and components increased by 2.17 billion; petroleum of all kinds - up by $ 679 million; ordinary metals – up by $ 455 million; fabrics of all kinds – up by $ 430 million; plastics – up by $ 425 million year – on - year.
In April only, the country’s imports of goods reached $ 17.2 billion, down by 8.9 per cent in quantity and 1.67 per cent in value. In the month, the import value of 39 of 53 groups of items saw decrease. The imports of computers, electronics and components decreased by $ 974 million; machines, equipment and spare parts – down by $ 268 million; ordinary metals – down by $ 175 million; plastics – down by $ 161 million; and petroleum of all kinds – down by $ 152 million.

The leading import items in the period were as followed:
Computers, electronics and components: Vietnam spent over $ 2.72 billion for import of computers, electronic products and components in April of 2018 and $ 13.14 billion in the first 4 months of 2018, up by 19.8 per cent compared with the same period of 2017.
The major import markets of computers, electronic products and components in the first 4 months of this year were South Korea with $ 5.83 billion, up by 34.2 per cent year – on – year; China - $ 2.1 billion, up by 0.5 per cent; Japan - $ 1.16 billion, up by 29.3 per cent; and Taiwan - $ 1.07 billion, up by 0.7 per cent.

Machines, equipment, tools and spare parts: : The country imported $ 2.45 billion worth of machines, equipment, tools and spare parts in April and $ 10 billion in the first 4 months of this year, down by 8.9 per cent year – on - year.
The main import markets of machines, equipment, tools and spare parts in the first 4 months of this year were China with $ 3.38 billion, up by 0.3 per cent year – on – year; South Korea – $ 1.91 billion, down by 42.2 per cent; and Japan - $ 1.41 billion, up by 1 per cent over the same period of 2017.

Telephones and components: Vietnam imported over $ 961 million worth of telephones and components in April and $ 4.28 billion in the first 4 months of this year, up by 6.4 per cent compared with the same period of 2017.
The main import markets of telephones and components in the period were China with $ 2.56 billion, up by 20.1 per cent year – on – year; and South Korea - $ 1.49 billion, up by 4.4 per cent year – on - year.

Fabrics of all kinds: Vietnam’s imports of fabrics of all kinds reached $ 1.1 billion in April and $ 3.76 billion in the first 4 months of this year, increased by 12.9 per cent over the same period of 2017.
The major import markets of fabrics of all kinds in the first 4 months of this year were China with $ 2 billion, up by 15.5 per cent; South Korea - $ 669 million, up by 10.3 per cent; and Taiwan - $ 513 million, up by 2.5 per cent.

Iron and steel of all kinds: The country imported 1.16 million tons of iron and steel of all kinds worth of $ 844 million in April and 4.28 million tons worth of $ 3.03 billion in the first 4 months of this year, down by 23.5 per cent in quantity and by 5.3 per cent in value year – on - year.
In the first 4 months of this year, the country imported 1.82 million tons of iron and steel of all kinds worth of $ 1.32 billion from China, down by 33.2 per cent in quantity and 12.4 per cent in value over the same period last year; from Japan – 708,000 tons worth of $ 486 million, down by 7.2 per cent in quantity but up by 7.4 per cent in value; and from South Korea – 595,000 tons worth of $ 474 million, up by 8.6 per cent in quantity and 21.6 per cent in value.

Petroleum of all kinds: The imports of petroleum of all kinds totaled 976,000 tons worth of $632 million in April, down by 20.4 per cent in quantity and 19.4 per cent in value over the previous month.
The figure brought the country’s total petroleum imports in the first 4 months of this year to 4.36 million tons worth of $ 2.82 billion, up by 10.7 per cent in quantity and 31.8 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.
The country’s top import markets of petroleum of all kinds the first 4 months of this year were Malaysia with 1.3 million tons, up by 69.3 per cent year – on – year; South Korea – 1.16 million tons, up by 16.6 per cent; Singapore – 914,000 tons, down by 43.9 per cent; and China – 503,000 tons, up by 46.2 per cent.

Plastics: The imports of plastics totaled 377,000 tons worth of $ 630 million in April, down by 22.4 per cent in quantity and 20.3 per cent in value over the previous month. The figure brought the country’s total imports of plastics in the first 4 months of this year to 1.69 million tons worth of $ 2.69 billion, up by 10.3 per cent in quantity and up by 18.8 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.
The country’s top import markets of plastics in the first 4 months of this year were South Korea with 295,000 tons worth of $ 506 million, up by 3.2 per cent in quantity and 8.8 per cent in value year – on – year; the U.A.E – 333,000 tons worth of $ 419 million, up by 15.1 per cent in quantity and 26 per cent in value.

Ordinary metals: Vietnam imported 129,000 tons of ordinary metals worth of $ 505 million in April, down by 31.9 per cent in quantity and by 25.8 per cent in value compared with the previous month. The figure of the first 4 months of this year was 579,000 tons worth of $ 2.16 million, down by 15.4 per cent in quantity but up by 26.7 per cent in value year – on – year.
The leading import markets of ordinary metals last year were South Korea with 122,000 tons worth of $ 494 million, down by 8.4 per cent in quantity and up by 5 per cent in value; China – 106,000 tons worth of $ 354 million, down by 7.6 per cent in quantity and up by 17.5 per cent in value.

Plastic products: The imports of plastic products reached $ 416 million in April and totaled $ 1.76 billion in the first 4 months of this year, up by 11 per cent year – on - year.
The country’s top import markets of plastic products in the first 4 months of this year were China with $ 629 million, up by 20.9 per cent year – on – year; South Korea – $ 528 million, up by 5 per cent; and Japan – $ 254 million, up by 5.9 per cent.

Textile, garment, leather and footwear materials: The country’s imports of textile, garment, leather and footwear materials reached $ 497 million in April and $ 1.74 billion in the first 4 months of this year, up by 0.8 per cent over the same period last year.
The major import markets of textile, garment, leather and footwear materials in 2017 were China with the import value of $ 646 million, down by 2.1 per cent; South Korea - $ 226 million, down by 5.3 per cent; Taiwan - $ 148 million, down by 11.1 per cent year – on – year.
