Shrimp exports to U.S. face impediments

 Tuesday, June 12,2018

AsemconnectVietnam - Anti-dumping tariffs and close supervision by the U.S. Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP) have hindered Vietnam’s seafood exports to America, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

Shrimp export revenue in the first four months of this year picked up 13.8% year-on-year at US$1 billion, but the figure in April was only US$275 million, down 0.4% versus the year-ago period, shows data of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

VASEP general secretary Truong Dinh Hoe said the U.S. has huge demand for seafood, especially shrimp of which American importers need around 600,000 tons a year. However, Vietnam can meet 10% of that demand, or 60,000 tons.
In March, the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) announced the preliminary results of its 12th administrative review of its antidumping order on frozen warm-water shrimp from Vietnam (POR12).
The calculated rate for the review from February 1, 2016 to January 31, 2017 for Sao Ta Seafoods Joint Stock Company (FIMEX VN) is 25.39%. That rate is now imposed on other shrimp exporters in Vietnam, as FIMEX was the only mandatory respondent, according to VASEP.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers said the DOC made a mistake in POR12, which resulted in a much higher-than-expected duty for shrimp imports from Vietnam, VASEP said in a statement.
