Vietnam’s export revenue surges 22 percent in the first quarter of this year
Monday, April 30,2018AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s export turnover was estimated at $ 54.31 billion in the first quarter of this year, up by 22 per cent over the same period last year according to the General Statistics Office.
The export turnover was at $ 19.8 billion in March of 2018, up by 38.2 per cent over the previous month. The leading export items in March were telephones and components with $ 5 billion, up by 47.1 per cent month – on – month; textiles and garments - $ 2.2 billion, up by 35 per cent; computers, electronics and components - $ 2.2 billion, up by 28 per cent.Especially, in March of this year, the exports of seafood increased sharply by 48.1 per cent over the previous month to $ 600 million. The total seafood exports in the first 3 months of this year were at $ 1.67 billion, up by 11.2 per cent year – on – year.The exports of coffee in March reached 180,000 tons worth of $ 347 million, up by 38.6 per cent, and by 38.1 per cent, respectively over the same period last year. The figure of the first 3 months of this year was 510 million tons worth of $ 989 million.In the first three months of 2018, Vietnam’s exports of goods increased sharply by 24.8 per cent compared with the same period last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
The exports of the FDI sector increased by 27.1 per cent.In the first quarter of this year, 11 of 46 groups of items saw the export turnover of over US$ 1 billion.
The leading items in the period were as followed:
Telephones and components
Vietnam exported $ 5.27 billion worth of telephones and components in March and $ 12.6 billion in the first three months of this year, up by 62.3 per cent compared with the same period of 2017.The main export markets of telephones and components in the period were EU (28 countries) with over $ 3.51 billion, up by 47.6 per cent year – on – year; China with $ 1.45 billion, up by 4.8 times; and the U.S - $ 1.41 billion, up by 128 per cent.
Textiles and garments
The country exported $ 2.32 billion worth of textiles and garments in March and $ 6.43 billion in the first three months of this year, up by 14.9 per cent or $ 831 million compared with the same period of 2017.The leading export markets of textiles and garments in 2017 were the U.S with $ 3.04 billion, up by 12.2 per cent year – on – year; Japan- $ 855 million, up by 20.1 per cent; EU (28 countries) - $ 824 million, up by 12.8 per cent compared with the previous year.
Computers, electronic products and components
Vietnam earned $ 2.25 billion from export of computers, electronic products and components in March of 2018, up by 31 per cent compared with the previous month. The figure brought the country’s total exports of computers, electronics and components in the first three months of this year to $ 6.33 billion, increased by 14.1 per cent compared with the same months of 2017.The major export markets of computers, electronic products and components in the period were China with $ 1.74 billion, up by 26.4 per cent year – on – year; the E.U - $ 1.17 billion, up by 12 per cent; South Korea - $ 642 million, up by 57.3 per cent.
Footwear of all kinds
The export of footwear of all kinds reached $ 1.19 billion in March and $ 3.44 billion in the first three months of this year, up by 10.6 per cent year – on - year.The country’s top export markets of footwear of all kinds in the first three months of this year were the U.S with $ 1.28 billion, up by 19.5 per cent year – on – year; the E.U (28 countries) - $ 962 million, down by 2.6 per cent.In the first two months of 2018, Vietnam’s exports of footwear of all kinds increased by 11 per cent over the same period of 2017 to US$ 2.25 billion showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
The U.S was the country’s biggest footwear export market in the first two months of this year with the export turnover of $ 800.23 million, up by 22.5 per cent year – on – year.EU market accounted for 28.3 per cent of the total with the export turnover of $ 637.5 million, down by 1.7 per cent; to China – up by 29.5 per cent to $ 226.53 million; and to Japan – up by 25 per cent to $ 160.99 million.In the first two months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of footwear of all kinds to India increased sharply by 110.3 per cent to $ 14.07 million; to Portugal – up by 66 per cent to $ 0.4 million; to Czech – up by 64.6 per cent to $ 12.14 million; to Turkey – up by 44.8 per cent to $ 3.27 million.
Machines, equipment, tools and spare parts
The country earned nearly $ 1.49 billion from exports of machines, equipment, tools and spare parts in March and $ 3.69 billion in the first three months of this year, up by 28.7 per cent over the same period last year.The main export markets of machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts in the first three months of this year were the U.S with $ 603 million, up by 0.3 per cent year – on – year; to the EU (28 countries) – $ 530 million, up by 43.8 per cent; and to India - $ 482 million, up by 4.8 per cent.
Means of transport and spare parts:
The country’s exports of means of transport and spare parts hit $ 721 million in March, up by 32.5 per cent month – on – month. The figure brought the country’s total export of means of transport and spare parts in the first three months of this year to $ 2.03 billion, up by 18.4 per cent year – on - year.In the first three months, the country’s export of means of transport and spare parts to Japan reached $ 581 million, up by 14.9 per cent; to the U.S - $ 276 million, up by 21.4 per cent; and to India - $ 100 million, up by 3.6 folds over the same period last year.
Wood and furniture
The country’s exports of wood and furniture hit $ 725 million in March, up by 65.9 per cent month – on – month. The figure brought the country’s total export of wood and furniture in the first three months of this year to $ 1.94 billion, up by 9.5 per cent year – on - year.In the first three months, the country’s exports of wood and furniture to the U.S reached $ 766 million, up by 10.8 per cent; to China - $ 270 million, up by 1 per cent; and to Japan - $ 264 million, up by 2.6 per cent year – on - year.
Seafood
The country’s export of seafood hit $ 702 million in March, up by 73.4 per cent month – on – month. The figure brought the country’s total export of seafood in the first three months of this year to $ 1.77 billion, up by 17.6 per cent year – on - year.In the first three months of this year, the country’s export of seafood to EU reached $ 312 million, up by 25.8 per cent; the U.S – $ 271 million, up by 9 per cent; to Japan – $ 264 million, up by 44.6 per cent over the same period last year.In the first quarter of this year, Vietnam’s exports of seafood increased by nearly 17 per cent over the same period last year to nearly US$ 1.77 billion showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.In March only, the country’s seafood exports reached $ 70.231 million, increased sharply by 73.4 per cent over the previous month and by 16.4 per cent over the same month of 2017.EU was the country’s biggest seafood export market in the period with the export turnover of $ 303.78 million, up by 25.9 per cent year – on – year. It was followed by the U.S with $ 271.43 million, up by 8.1 per cent; Japan - $ 263.99 million, up by 4.4 per cent; China - $ 205.5 million, up by 42.2 per cent; and South Korea - $ 179.15 million, up by 27.2 per cent.The exports of seafood to the South East Asian countries reached $ 143.85 million, up by 16.3 per cent year – on – year.In the first quarter of this year, the country’s exports of seafood to Cambodia increased by 133.3 per cent to $ 6.64 million; to Turkey – up by 131.3 per cent to $ 1.89 million; to Pakistan – up by 90.8 per cent to $ 10.47 million; to India – up by 57.9 per cent to $ 7.42 million; to the Netherlands – up by 55.7 per cent to $ 66.98 million; to Portugal – up by 54.3 per cent to $ 13 million; and to Iraq – up by 50.7 per cent to $ 1.82 million.However, the exports of seafood to Indonesia, Brazil and Ukraine decreased sharply by 62.6 per cent; 35 per cent and 28.4 per cent, respectively year – on – year.
Cameras, camcorders and components:
The exports of cameras, camcorders and components reached $ 279 million in March and $ 1.05 billion in the first three months of this year, up by 41.7 per cent over the same period last year.The exports of cameras, camcorders and components to China in the first three months totaled $ 504 million, up by 14 per cent; and to Hong Kong reached $ 280 million, up by 47.6 per cent year – on – year.
Iron and steel
Vietnam’s exports of iron and steel of all kinds hit 519,000 tons worth of $ 390 million, up by 8.9 in quantity and 15.8 per cent in value compared with the previous month. The figure of the first three months of this year was 1.43 million tons worth of $ 1.04 billion, up by 38.5 per cent in quantity and 57.3 per cent in value.The major export markets of iron and steel of all kinds in the first three months of this year were Cambodia with 284,000 tons worth of $ 180 million, up by 37.6 per cent in value and 59.1 per cent in quantity; the U.S – 217,000 tons worth of $ 179 million, up by 131.3 per cent in quantity and 144.9 per cent in value; to Indonesia – 186,000 tons worth of $ 147 million, up by 25.3 per cent in quantity and 37.6 per cent in value year – on -year.
Farm-forestry-fishery
Of the figure, the exports of major farm products reached US$ 4.6 billion, up by 9 per cent year - on - year, while, the exports of seafood reached $ 1.7 billion, up by 11.5 per cent; and the exports of forestry items reached nearly $ 2 billion, up by 6.6 per cent.In March, the exports of rice were estimated at 524,000 tons worth of $ 261 million, raising the total rice export volume in January-March to 1.36 million tons worth of $ 669 million, up by 9.4 per cent in volume and 24 percent in value compared with the same period of 2017.Meanwhile, the exports of cashew nuts were estimated at 26,000 tons worth of $ 265 million in March and 73,000 tons worth of $ 739 million, up by 30.9 per cent in quantity and 43.6 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.The exports of wood and furniture were estimated at $ 661 million in March and $ 1.87 billion in the first 3 months of this year, up by 5.8 per cent over the same period of 2017.The country also earned $ 604 million from exports of seafood in March and $ 1.7 billion in the first 3 months of 2018, up by 11.5 per cent year – on – year. The U.S, Japan, China and South Korea were the leading seafood export market markets of Vietnam.According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country’s imports of farm, forestry and seafood products were estimated at $ 2.43 billion in March and $ 6.89 billion in the first 3 months of this year, up by 8.4 per cent year – on – year. Of the figure, the imports of farm, forestry and seafood products reached $ 5.42 billion, up by 19 per cent year – on - year.
Coffee
Vietnam’s exports of coffee in February decreased sharply by 35.3 per cent in quantity and 35.9 per cent in value compared with the previous month to 129,893 tons worth of $ 251.3 million. The figure was down by 11.3 per cent in quantity and 24.3 per cent in value compared with the same month of last year.The country’s total coffee exports in the first two months of this year reached 329,829 tons worth of $ 641.57 million, up by 15.1 per cent in quantity but down by 1.1per cent in value compared with the same period of 2017. The average coffee export price in the first two months of this year was down by 14 per cent year – on – year to $ 1,945 per ton.The leading coffee export markets in the first two months of this year were Germany, the U.S, Indonesia, Italy and Japan. The country’s exports of coffee to Germany accounted for over 15 per cent of the total quantity and 14 per cent of the total value with 49.716 tons worth of $ 90.26 million, down by 2 per cent in quantity and 18 per cent in value compared with the same months of 2017.The exports of coffee to the U.S reached 37,010 tons worth of $ 72.27 million, down by 16.2 per cent in quantity and 28.7 per cent in value year – on – year.Meanwhile, the exports of coffee to Indonesia rocketed by over 17 folds in quantity and over 15 folds in value compared with the same period last year to 28,665 tons worth of $ 54.28 million, accounted for over 8 per cent of the total.The exports of coffee to EU reached 134,828 tons worth of $ 251.26 million, down by 3.8 per cent in quantity and by 18.4 per cent in value year – on – year.The exports to the South East Asian countries increased sharply by 248.8 per cent in quantity and 181.7 per cent in value compared with the same period last year to 47,061 tons worth of $ 92.74 million.In the first two months of this year, the country’s exports of coffee to Greece also increased sharply by 346.5 per cent to $ 4.68 million; to South Africa – up by 257 per cent to $ 3.72 million; to New Zealand – up by 90.5 per cent to $ 1.04 million; and to Egypt – up by 80 per cent to $ 3.81 million.
Fruits and vegetables
Vietnam’s exports of fruits and vegetables totaled US$ 970.09 million in the first quarter of this year, increased sharply by 38.5 per cent over the same period last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.In March only, the country’s exports of fruits and vegetables reached nearly $ 321.58 million, up by 20.4 per cent over the previous month and by 145 per cent over the same month of 2017. In the period, the country’s exports of fruits and vegetables to China increased by 42 per cent over the same quarter of last year to $ 726.62 million.Besides, the exports of fruits and vegetables to the U.S reached $ 28.95 million, up by 18.3 per cent; to Japan - $ 28.38 million, up by 26.4 per cent; to South Korea - $ 23.93 million, up by 8.3 per cent; to Malaysia - $ 14.54 million, up by 19 per cent; to the Netherlands - $ 13.32 million, up by 22.7 per cent; and to the U.A.E - $ 10.2 million, up by 15 per cent.Especially, the exports of fruits and vegetables to Cambodia rocketed by 247.9 per cent; to Kuwait – up by 150 per cent; to Italy – up by 39.5 per cent; to France – up by 61.7 per cent.
Cameras, camcorders and components
In the first two months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of cameras, camcorders and components to Australia rocketed by 22 folds compared with the same period last year. Vietnam exported US$ 768.78 million worth of cameras, camcorders and components in the first two months of this year, increased sharply by 51.5 per cent over the same period last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.China was leading the list of the country’s export markets of cameras, camcorders and components in the first two months of this year with the export turnover of $ 401.28 million, up by 31.3 per cent year – on – year and accounted for 52.2 per cent of the total.Hong Kong ranked second with $ 186.99 million, up by 46 per cent; and then South Korea - $ 65.05 million, rocketed by 398 per cent.In the first two months of this year, the country’s exports of cameras, camcorders and components to Australia rocketed by 22 times compared with the same period last year to $ 0.75 million, while the exports to South Korea also increased sharply by 398 per cent to $ 65.05 million; and to Japan – up by 157 per cent to $ 32.02 million.However, the exports of cameras, camcorders and components to EU decreased sharply by 32 per cent year – on – year to $ 2.56 million; to Germany – down by 50.8 per cent to $ 1.39 million; and to Canada – down by 77 per cent to $ 0.2 million.
Rice
Vietnam exported 1.49 million tons of rice worth of US$ 744.96 million in the first quarter of this year, increased by 15.5 per cent in quantity and 31.8 per cent in value over the same period last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.In March only, the country exported 658,818 tons of rice worth of $ 338.44 million, increased sharply by 93.9 per cent in quantity and over 100 per cent in value compared with the previous month.China was the country’s biggest rice export markets in the first quarter of this year with 411,605 tons worth of $ 216.55 million, accounted for 27.7 per cent of the total quantity and 39 per cent of the total export value of the country in the period. The figure was down by 22 per cent in quantity and 11.5 per cent in value year – on – year.Indonesia ranked second with 234,099 tons worth of $ 110.62 million, rocketed by 520 times in quantity and 378 times in value year – on – year.The Philippines ranked third with 177,092 tons worth of $ 79.21 million, down by 24.8 per cent in quantity and by 11.7 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.Meanwhile, the exports of rice to the South East Asian countries reached 429,093 tons worth of $ 197 million, up by 21 per cent in quantity and 35.7 per cent in value and accounted for 28.9 per cent of the total.In the first quarter of this year, Vietnam’s exports of rice to Bangladesh rocketed by 89 times in quantity and 59 times in value; to Turkey – up by 16 times in quantity and 23 times in value; to Iraq – up by 11 times in quantity and 16 times in value; to Malaysia – up by 207.7 per cent in quantity and 232.5 per cent in value; and to France – up by 151 per cent in quantity and 84.7 per cent in value.
However, the exports of rice to Argentina, Chile, Ukraine, Angola and Singapore decreased by 91.7 per cent; 89.9 per cent; 81.2 per cent; 72.8 per cent and 65.4 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.
Fertilizer
Vietnam exported 100,800 tons of fertilizer worth of US$ 32 million in March, increased sharply by 57.1 per cent in quantity and 53 per cent in value over the previous month, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.The figure brought the country’s total exports of fertilizer in the first quarter of this year to 227,500 tons worth of $ 72.3 million, up by 6.8 per cent in quantity and 26.1 per cent in value. Cambodia was the country’s leading fertilizer export market in the first quarter of this year with 75,200 tons worth of $ 26.2 million, up by 29.63 per cent in quantity and 36.74 per cent in value year – on – year.It was followed by Malaysia with 43,700 tons worth of $ 8.6 million, up by 4.16 per cent in quantity and 9.2 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.The other fertilizer export markets included Laos, Thailand and South Korea.
Exports to Cambodia
Vietnam’s exports of goods to Cambodia totaled US$ 512.7 million in the first two months of this year, increased by 32.15 per cent over the same period of 2017, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs. In February, the country’s exports to Cambodia were down by 34.6 per cent month – on – month to $ 203.2 million. Iron and steel of all kinds; petroleum of all kinds; textiles and garments; textile, garment, leather and footwear materials were the leading items exported by the country to Cambodia in the first two months of this year. The exports of iron and steel reached $ 105.2 million, accounted for 37.5 per cent of the total, up by 70.16 per cent in quantity and 45.35 per cent in value.Meanwhile, the exports of petroleum of all kinds to Cambodia reached 98,400 tons worth of $ 60.7 million, down by 12.83 per cent in quantity and 1.77 per cent in value compared with the same period last year. The exports of textiles and garments to Cambodia increased by 27.4 per cent; textile, garment, leather and footwear materials – up by 63.92 per cent; and fertilizer – up by 43.79 per cent.
In the first two months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of seafood; fruits and vegetables; and telephones and components to Cambodia increased sharply by 145.73 per cent; 154.18 per cent and 290.29 per cent year – on – year, respectively.However, the exports of glass and products to Cambodia decreased sharply by 65.42 per cent to $ 254,900.
Exports to China
Vietnam exported US$ 8.2 billion worth of goods to China in the first three months of this year, increased sharply by 33.12 per cent over the same period last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.In March only, the country earned $ 2.6 billion from exports to China, up by 30.06 per cent month – on – month.Computers, electronics and components were the leading items exported by the country to China in the first quarter of this year with the export turnover of $ 1.7 billion, up by 26.93 per cent year – on – year. It was followed by telephones and components with $ 1.4 billion, up by 477.51 per cent; and fruits and vegetables - $ 726.6 million, up by 41.93 per cent. In the first three months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of paper and products to China increased by over 6 times compared with the same period last year to $ 37.4 million; while the exports of plastics and plastic materials to China increased by 184.13 per cent and 137.08 per cent, respectively.However, in the period, the country’s exports of crude oil to China decreased by 56.59 per cent; and the exports of glass and products – decreased by 55.71 per cent.
