Vietnam is the world's third-largest exporter, after India and Thailand, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. Its fragrant rice exports account for about 10 percent of the total annual shipment.

PRODUCTION:
The southern region produced 29.74 million tonnes of paddy in 2016, or nearly 70 percent of Vietnam's total, based on data from the General Statistics Office. The Delta supplies 90 percent of the country's exportable grain.

Vietnam retains 20 percent of paddy output for reserves. It aims to cut the post-harvest loss rate to below 8 percent of output by 2020, from nearly 14 percent now.

Vietnam also aims to reduce the total rice acreage to cope with climate change, targeting areas facing salination and water shortages.

Vietnam has more than 80 rice exporters, selling a fifth of the global rice trade.
Top buyers by value in January-October 2017 were China and the Philippines.
