Vietnam's 5-pct broken rice up 6.5 pct at $460/T

 Wednesday, July 23,2014

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's 5-percent broken rice rose more than 6 percent in the past week to $445-$460 a tonne, the highest in 21 months, due to loading demand for shipments to the Philippines and

Malaysia and strong sales to China, traders said on Wednesday.

The 25-percent broken rice grade also jumped, to $400-$420 a tonne, free-on-board basis, from $380-$390 a week ago, traders said.  RICE/ASIA1

The 5-percent broken grain being quoted at $460 a tonne is the highest since Oct. 30, 2012, when the variety stood at $455-$460 a tonne, based on Reuters data.

Rising rice prices at home may cause Vietnam, the world's second-biggest exporter of the grain, to lose out in the Philippines' upcoming tender for an additional 500,000 tonnes, traders said.
