In the context of difficulties caused by the complicated development of the COVID-19 epidemic and the tension between Russia and Ukraine, the conflict has not "cooled down", but import and export still have impressive growth, especially in the wood industry.
In the first 3 months of 2022, the country’s export turnover of wood and wood products was estimated at 3.94 billion USD, up by 3% over the same period of 2021. The import potential of the US market shows that, the strong growth in wood exports to the U.S will contribute to promoting good growth of the wood industry in 2022.
The export of wood and wood products is the "trump card" in the agricultural sector. With the second position in the exports of wood and wood products in Asia and a fast growth rate of 17% per year, economic experts believe that wood exports will continue to sublimate in 2022.
However, the timber industry is facing many challenges that need to be overcome.
Although ranked second in export of wood and wood products in Asia, sharing with a reporter of Vietnam Business Electronic Magazine, Dr. To Xuan Phuc, an analyst at Forest Trends, said that the wood industry also facing great challenges in terms of raw material supply for export. The price of raw wood is increasing sharply, threatening the wood export industry, which is very positive today.
Currently, the price of New Zealand round pine has increased to 175-180 USD/m3, increasing from 32-35 USD/m3; Chilean round pine is priced at 190 USD/m3, an increase of 35 USD/m3.
Mr. Vo Quang Ha, General Director of Tan Vinh Cuu Joint Stock Company (TAVICO) also said that importing wood in the near future will be very difficult because Europe reduces exports, retaining a part of raw wood to compensate supply shortage from Russia. Facing this situation, the Chairman of Binh Duong Woodworking Association Nguyen Liem emphasized that the wood industry is in need of more raw material areas and large-scale preliminary processing centers. To overcome the "bottleneck" of lack of raw materials, the forestry industry is promoting planting of material areas according to standards.
