Uber BV completely pays off tax arrears

AsemconnectVietnam - The Netherlands-based Uber BV Company has completed its remaining tax arrears payment of VND53 billion (US$2.26 million), immediately after the firm withdrew its petition against the Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Tax department.
According to the deputy general director of the department, his agency in early September 2017 issued a decision on the punishment of administrative violations on tax and collection of over VND66.68 billion of arrears for Uber BV.
However, Uber BV paid only VND13.3 billion (US$568,761) and refused to pay the remaining VND53 billion, which included the value added tax and personal income tax payable by its drivers. It made a complaint to the Ministry of Finance and sued the tax department to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court.
In late March 2018, Uber BV stopped operations and closed all offices in Vietnam by merging with Grab, causing difficulty for the municipal tax department in collecting tax arrears from the firm.
However, on July 26, Uber BV withdrew its petition against the department. The municipal People’s Court decided to suspend Uber’s administrative law suit against the department.
The Department said the firm was fined for wrongful declaration, resulting in a shortage of tax of nearly VND10.3 billion (US$440,469), and payable tax arrears of nearly VND51.48 billion (over US$2.2 million).
In addition, the company also has to pay a late payment of VND4.9 billion (US$209,494) as of August 31, 2017.
