Imports and exports of farm products in 5 months

Farm exports in 5 months totaled $ 13.7 billion
Vietnam’s export of major farm products was estimated at US$ 2.8 billion in May of 2017 and $ 13.7 billion in the first five months of this year, up by 9.5 per cent over the same period last year, according to the statistics figures. Of the figure, the exports of the major farm products were estimated at $ 7.3 billion, up by 12.6 per cent year – on – year.
The export figures of several items are as followed:
Rice: Vietnam exported 538,000 tons of rice valued at $ 245 million in May, and 2.3 million tons worth of $ 1 billion in the first five months, up by 1.6 per cent in quantity and 1.2 per cent in value year – on – year. The average rice export price in the first 4 months of 2017 was $ 445 per ton, down by 0.2 per cent compared with the same period of 2016. China was still the country’s biggest rice export market in the first 4 months of this year with 47.5 per cent of the market share. In the reviewed period, the country’s export of rice to China increased by 16.1 per cent in quantity and by 16.2 per cent in value year – on – year to 815,400 tons worth of $ 376.2 million. The export of rice to the Philippines was up by 24 per cent in quantity and 10.9 per cent in value to 236,600 tons worth of $ 90.1 million; to Ghana – up by 51 per cent; to Hong Kong – up by 45.4 per cent; to the U.S – up by 21 per cent and to Ivory Coast – up by 18.2 per cent.
Coffee: Vietnam’s export of coffee was estimated at 105,000 tons worth of $ 233 million in May and 693,000 million tons worth of $ 1.57 billion in the first five months of this year, down by 15.9 per cent in quantity but up by 11 per cent in value year – on – year. The average coffee export price in the first 4 months of 2017 was at $ 2,267 per ton, up by 33.5 per cent over the same period of 2016. Germany and the U.S were the country’s biggest coffee export markets in 2015 with the market shares of 16.9 per cent and 15.4 per cent, respectively. In the first five months of this year, the country’s exports of coffee to Belgium increased by 46.6 per cent; to the U.S – 42.5 per cent; to Algeria – up by 38.8 per cent; to Germany – up by 29.1 per cent; to Italy – up by 26 per cent; to Japan – up by 21.8 per cent; and to Spain – up by 11.7 per cent.
Tea: Vietnam’s export of tea was estimated at 10,000 tons worth of $ 17 million in May and 48,000 tons worth of $ 73 million in the first five months of this year, up by 14.3 per cent in quantity and 12.4 per cent in value year – on – year. The average tea export price in the first 4 months of this year was at $ 1,452 per ton, down by 3.8 per cent over the same period of 2016. Pakistan was the country’s biggest tea export market in the reviewed period with the market share of 25.5 per cent. In the first four months of this year, the country’s export of tea to India, Poland, the U.A.E, Taiwan and Russia increased by 11.6 per cent; 93.6 per cent; 77.5 per cent; 44.3 per cent; and 17.5 per cent respectively over the same period last year.
Over US$ 11 billion spent on farm imports
According to the estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country’s imports of farm, forestry and seafood products reached $ 2.52 billion in May, and $ 11.2 billion in the first five months of this year, up by 23.6 per cent over the same period of 2016. Of the figure, the imports of major farm products reached $ 8.48 billion, up by 32.3 per cent year – on – year.
The imports of wood and furniture hit $ 179 million in May and $ 863 million in the first five months of this year, up by 16.6 per cent over the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the imports of seafood reached $ 87 million in May and $ 508 million in the first five months of this year, up by 28 per cent year – on – year.
The imports of fruit and vegetables reached $ 154 million in May and $ 470 million in the first five months, rose sharply by 68.6 per cent over the same months of 2016. Of the figure, the imports of vegetables were estimated at $ 100 million, up by 49 per cent while the imports of fruits reached $ 353 million, up by 75 per cent year –on – year.
