CGV plans US$200 million cinema investment

 Tuesday, May 30,2017

AsemconnectVietnam - CGV, a unit of South Korean firm CJ Group, is planning to spend US$200 million expanding its cinema system in Vietnam, CJ CGV Vietnam (CGV) said last Friday at the launch of ScreenX immersive technology.

ScreenX technology offers a 270-degree view from a three-dimensional angle. It is in use at more than 100 theaters in Korea, China, the U.S., Thailand, Indonesia and Turkey.

CGV is working on plans to build cinemas with large screens in Hanoi and HCMC until 2020. Three to four locations have been chosen for large-screen cinemas in the two cities.

CJ CGV Vietnam last week inaugurated the CGV Vincom cinema in Hau Giang Province, taking the firm’s total in Vietnam to 45 cinemas with 278 studios and more than 37,450 seats. By late this year CGV’s cinemas nationwide are expected to rise to 54-55.

CGV plans to open12-15 new cinemas a year, including four to five in remote provinces. With each cinema costing US$4-7 million, CGV’s total investment in 2017 could amount to US$70 million.

CGV started operating cinemas in Vietnam in mid-2011 by acquiring MegaStar, the country’s largest cinema chain at the time, at US$73.6 million. CGV is a subsidiary of CJ Group, one of the top five cinema chains in the world and the largest film publisher and cinema operator in Vietnam.
