Besides an increase in domestic flight frequencies in 2016, Vietjet steadily expanded its international network. The air carrier, whose fleet of 45 aircraft has an average age of 3.3 years, is now flying to 63 destinations, with 37 of them at home and 26 abroad.
The airline operates 350 flights daily and has to date transported 35 million passengers on 63 domestic and international routes to all big cities of Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia, among others.
In related news, Vietnam Airlines has signed a contract to lease six more A321neo Airbus aircraft from Aviation Capital Group (ACG) to spur its transport capacity on domestic routes.
These six planes are part of a contract to lease 20 by Vietnam Airlines to be handed over in 2018 and 2019.
Vietnam Airlines is making preparations to report to an extraordinary general meeting on selling and leasing four airplanes including a Boeing B787-9 and three Airbus A350s. These airplanes will be handed over in 2017.
In 2015, Vietnam Airlines expanded its fleet by signing contracts to buy and lease 14 A350s and 19 Boeing 787s that are to be delivered before 2020, with the first few aircraft handed over to the national flag air carrier at the end of that year. However, they adjusted their plan soon after that.
According to Pham Ngoc Minh, board chairman of Vietnam Airlines, selling and leasing back airplanes will help the airline restructure its fleet, and gradually decrease its debt-to-equity ratio.
