Nestlé Vietnam helps coffee farmers improve productivity, income
Friday, September 14,2018AsemconnectVietnam - Nestlé Vietnam has helped over 20,000 households of coffee growers improve productivity and income through applying new technology from the NESCAFÉ Plan project, said the firm’s General Director Ganesan Ampalavanar.
Ganesan Ampalavanar delivered a presentation at the panel session “Food Systems: Innovative ASEAN” and opened the session “Accelerating Trade and Investment in Asia Pacific”.
At the session on Food Systems - ASEAN Reform, Ganesan Ampalavanar emphasised the need to shift the food system on the threat of supply shortage, saying that the application of technologies in agricultural production as well as change of business models are innovative ways to overcome the situation.
He also provided practical examples on what Nestlé Vietnam has been doing to help more than 20,000 coffee farmers improve their productivity and income through applying new techniques and technologies from the NESCAFÉ Plan.
While assessing the implementation of the initiative "New Vision in Agriculture" and the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong highlighted the role played by Nestlé Vietnam in promoting development and chain connectivity in the coffee sector.
In nearly eight years of implementation, NESCAFÉ Plan has formed areas of material production, and coffee farmers have learned cultivation techniques to achieve the highest productivity and income, he noted.
Cuong said the key investor, Nestlé Vietnam, and Vietnamese businesses are doing well their role as technical and administrative guides, buyers of agricultural products, as well as processing organisers and value chain distributors.
Initiated by Nestlé Vietnam since 2011, NESCAFÉ Plan has supported the sustainable coffee re-cultivation activities by providing Vietnamese farmers with high quality coffee seedlings with 50% of price supporting.
It aims to promote sustainable agriculture development and increase the quality and yield of Vietnamese coffee trees, thus improving incomes for about 500,000 coffee farmers.
