Vietnam, Canada agree to establish comprehensive partnership framework

AsemconnectVietnam - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau consented to establish the framework of a comprehensive partnership between the two countries during their talks in Hanoi on November 8.

The two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the positive development of the Vietnam-Canada friendship and cooperation over the past years, saying that the establishment of the framework represented an important landmark in the bilateral ties, serving as a driving force to promptly augment friendship and extensive cooperation at a time when the two countries have increasingly been sharing interests bilaterally, regionally and globally.
The two sides will coordinate to realise contents in the comprehensive partnership framework across politics-diplomacy, trade-investment, development, education-training, national defence-security and science-technology. 
PM Phuc praised the remarkable contributions to the two countries’ diplomatic ties made by late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin Trudeau’s father, affirming that Vietnam treasures and desires to propel its relations with Canada forwards.

Over the past more than two decades, Canada has always been among the top provider of official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam, and called for the country’s further provide this capital source, especially for poverty reduction, climate change response, agriculture and sustainable growth, and support for Vietnam’s access to preferential loans after 2017, he said. 

The Vietnamese government leader suggested Canada recognise Vietnam as a market economy soon, further open the market to Vietnamese goods and give more support to the Vietnamese community. 

For his part, the Canadian PM described Vietnam as an important partner of Canada in the region and wished to further promote bilateral friendship and long-term cooperation with Vietnam.

He pledged to support Vietnam in climate change response and promotion of sustainable development via the implementation of the 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development. 

Justin Trudeau vowed to enhance academic exchange by establishing partnerships and student exchange programmes between the two countries’ educational establishments. 
The two leaders concurred to continue working closely together at regional and global forums such as the UN, APEC, Francophonie, as well as issues of shared concern. 
Regarding regional and global issues of shared concern, the two PMs voiced their support for ensured maritime and aviation security, safety and freedom in the East Sea, the peaceful settlement of disputes in the East Sea, full respect for diplomatic and legal processes, and international law, as well as promotion of ocean use for peaceful purposes, environmental and marine ecological protection. 

The same day, the two PMs attended a joint press conference informing the outcomes of their talks.
