Japanese Emperor, Empress wrap up VN visit
Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko on March 5 concluded their first-ever six-day State visit to Viet Nam at the invitation of President Tran Dai Quang.
During their stay, the royal couple had a meeting with President Tran Dai Quang and enjoyed a banquet hosted by the State leader and his spouse, while meeting Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his wife, and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. They also attended a tea party held by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his wife.
The Japanese Emperor and Empress also laid a wreath and paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum in Ha Noi.
PM asks for GDP growth of 6.7% in 2017
PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc on March 1 chaired a Cabinet meeting to review socio-economic performance in February and discuss ways to accelerate economic growth as planned.
Speaking at the meeting, the PM hailed achievements made by authorities of big cities such as Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City in keeping urban order and clearing pavements for pedestrians over recent days.
The PM required participating delegates to discuss measures to address challenges for Viet Nam such as labor capacity, poverty, environmental protection and climate change, which were pointed out by the World Bank Country Director in Viet Nam.
He demanded the Ministers of Industry and Trade, Agriculture and Rural Development, Transport, Construction, Culture, Sports and Tourism, Finance and the State Bank of Viet Nam resolutely launch tasks to ensure growth rate of 6.7% in 2017.
PM attends flag-raising ceremonies for submarines
PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a flag-raising ceremony on the navy’s two new Kilo-class submarines in the south central coastal province of Khanh Hoa on February 28.
The submarines, named the HQ-186 Da Nang and HQ-187 Ba Ria-Vung Tau, were among the six submarines that Viet Nam purchased from Russia as part of their contract signed in 2009, and the last ones to be delivered. 
On behalf of the Government, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the purchase of the most modern diesel-fueled submarines for the Navy is part of the strategic vision of the Party and State to strengthen the national defence at sea and increase capacity for the naval force.
VN-U.S. double taxation avoidance agreement approved
The Government recently issued a resolution to ratify an agreement and a protocol on avoiding double taxation and preventing income tax evasion between Viet Nam and the United States of America.
The agreement aims to avoid or eliminate double taxation of the same income in the two countries while creating a legal framework for Viet Nam’s taxation department and foreign taxation agencies in international tax management.
VN-Australia Work-Holiday Visa Agreement takes effect
A reciprocal work and holiday visa agreement between Viet Nam and Australia took effect from March 1, 2017.
This agreement will allow young Vietnamese people, aged between 18 and 30, to travel to Australia for one year and undertake short-term work and study as well as young Australians to work and holiday in Viet Nam.
The agreement, inked on March 18, 2015, facilitates people-to-people exchanges and strengthens the Comprehensive Partnership between the two nations.
Microsoft supports MONRE in IT development
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) and Microsoft on March 1 officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding on promoting collaboration in management and exploitation of information technology (IT) systems.
Accordingly, the two sides will cooperate on key areas, including transferring and updating IT trends, developing IT human resources for the ministry and collaborating in consulting for e-government architecture in the environment sector and national database architecture for natural resources and environment. 
It would also standardize optimal IT systems to improve management, operational efficiency and ensure information security as well as orienting cloud-based platform and infrastructure development for certain services.
VN rejects China’s new fishing regulations
Viet Nam resolutely opposes and rejects China’s new regulations on a fishing break at sea, Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Le Hai Binh has said. 
He made the statement on February 28 in response to reporters’ queries about the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture’s official announcement on the application of the regulations, which also cover some waters areas of Viet Nam. 
The spokesman emphasized that Viet Nam has sufficient legal ground and historical evidence affirming its sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago as well as legitimate rights over its waters in line with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
