State President Tran Dai Quang expected that the Japanese Emperor and Empress’ State visit to Viet Nam will strengthen trust and knowledge between the two peoples, promoting Viet Nam-Japan Intensive Strategic Partnership in the future. Welcoming the Emperor and Empress to Viet Nam in early 2017, the State President said he regarded their visit a historical milestone in the two nations’ relationship. The two sides talked about the long-term exchanges between the two nations and appraised the fast and fruitful developments in bilateral relationship over the past more than 40 years, and expressed their hope to accelerate the cooperative relations in the future. PM asks for GDP growth of 6.7% in 2017 PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc on March 1 chaired a Cabinet meeting to review socio-economic performance in February and discuss ways to accelerate economic growth as planned. Speaking at the meeting, the PM hailed achievements made by authorities of big cities such as Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City in keeping urban order and clearing pavements for pedestrians over recent days. The PM required participating delegates to discuss measures to address challenges for Viet Nam such as labor capacity, poverty, environmental protection and climate change, which were pointed out by the World Bank Country Director in Viet Nam. He demanded the Ministers of Industry and Trade, Agriculture and Rural Development, Transport, Construction, Culture, Sports and Tourism, Finance and the State Bank of Viet Nam resolutely launch tasks to ensure growth rate of 6.7% in 2017. VN-Australia Work-Holiday Visa Agreement takes effect A reciprocal work and holiday visa agreement between Viet Nam and Australia took effect from March 1, 2017. This agreement will allow young Vietnamese people, aged between 18 and 30, to travel to Australia for one year and undertake short-term work and study as well as young Australians to work and holiday in Viet Nam. The agreement, inked on March 18, 2015, facilitates people-to-people exchanges and strengthens the Comprehensive Partnership between the two nations. Microsoft supports MONRE in IT development The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) and Microsoft on March 1 officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding on promoting collaboration in management and exploitation of information technology (IT) systems. Accordingly, the two sides will cooperate on key areas, including transferring and updating IT trends, developing IT human resources for the ministry and collaborating in consulting for e-government architecture in the environment sector and national database architecture for natural resources and environment. It would also standardize optimal IT systems to improve management, operational efficiency and ensure information security as well as orienting cloud-based platform and infrastructure development for certain services. Number of newly-established enterprises rises 3.9% in two months As many as 14,451 newly-established enterprises, with a registered capital of VND152,600 billion, were recorded in the first two months of 2017, representing an increase of 3.9% in the number and up 35% in the registered capital against the same period in 2016. The average capital of a new enterprise reached VND10.6 billion, up 29.9%. The total additional capital attained VND181,300 billion, raising the total capital of VND333,900 billion to the economy. CPI in February slightly increases The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in February increased 0.23% compared to the previous month and 5.02% against the same period last year. The average CPI over the recent two months of 2017 saw a year-on-year increase of 5.12%. Among 11 main commodities and services, seven witnessed rises in prices, including building material up 0.77%, transport up 0.56%, medicine and health service up 0.22%, culture, entertainment and tourism up 0.15%, goods and other services up 0.14%, restaurants and food services up 0.11% and equipment and household commodities up 0.05%. The prices of three groups decreased, including telecommunications down 0.07%, garments, headwear and footwear down 0.05% and beverage and tobacco down 0.01%. The price of education group remained stable. Hai Phong takes lead in IIP in two months The nation’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) saw a year-on-year increase of 15.2% in February. The IIP over the recent two months picked up 2.4% against the same period last year. The northern city of Hai Phong took the lead, posting a growth of 17.2%, followed by Thai Nguyen province 10.1%, Da Nang city 9.6%, Ho Chi Minh City 5.8% and Ha Noi 5.1%. By Thuy Dung
