VN, Indonesia agree to boost bilateral ties

AsemconnectVietnam - Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh met with Indonesian FM Retno Marsudi in Boracay, the Philippines on February 20, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat.

 At the meeting, the two sides agreed to foster the traditional friendship and strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Indonesia through the strengthening of high-level exchanges in 2017, including the Viet Nam visit by the Indonesian President and the visit to Indonesia by President Tran Dai Quang.
They pledged to promote cooperation mechanisms, particularly the Bilateral Cooperation Committee meeting at the foreign ministerial level slated for the third quarter in Viet Nam, and the Joint Committee on economic, scientific and technological cooperation.
Both sides also agreed to accelerate security and defence ties, voicing the willingness to share information and work closely with each other to combat terrorism in the region, thereby contributing to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for development.
The two FMs stressed the need to boost the prompt delimitation of the exclusive economic zones beyond the continental shelf between the two countries.
Deputy PM Minh spoke highly of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry’s collaboration in handling the issues relating to the Vietnamese fishermen held in Indonesia over the past time, while asking the Indonesian side to continue dealing with the issues in the spirit of humanity and in line with the Viet Nam-Indonesia strategic partnership.
Indonesian FM Retno Marsudi pledged to work closely with Viet Nam in the Viet Nam APEC Year 2017 and promote the central role of ASEAN as well as its balanced development across all the three pillars: politics-security, economics and socio-culture.
Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation and support the Philippines to fulfill well its role as the ASEAN Chair in 2017, in order to ensure ASEAN’s policies and guidelines in regional issues will continue to be implemented in an effective fashion.
Concerning the East Sea issue, the two sides highlighted the significance of maintaining peace, stability and maritime and aviation security and safety; agreed to persistently pursue the common stance of handling disputes through peaceful means on the basis of respecting international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 and other diplomatic and legal processes; and pledged to work closely with other ASEAN member nations in effectively implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and accelerating the finalization of a Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC).
