Vietnam’s first quarter import and export figures and markets

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s imports and exports both saw increases in the first 3 months of this year. The country’s trade exchange with almost all continents increased, and the country’s export of goods to the leading export markets also increased.

Imports and exports up

Vietnam’s trade revenue reached nearly US$ 29.61 billion in March, sharply increased by 45.2 per cent or $ 9.22 billion over the previous month, according to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.

Of the figure, the export turnover was at $ 15.12 billion, up by 49.7  per cent or $ 5 billion; and the import value was at $ 14.49 billion, up by 40.8 per cent or $ 4.2 billion month – on – month.

In the first 3 months of this year, the country’s total trade revenue hit $ 79.17 billion, up by 1.1 per cent over the same period last year. The export turnover in the first 3 months of this year was at $ 38.77 billion, up by 6.6 per cent year – on – year; and the import value was at $ 37.4 billion, down by 4 per cent.   

The total trade revenue of FDI sector reached $ 49.77 billion in the first 3 months of this year,  up by 3.3 per cent over the same period last year and accounted for 65.3 per cent of the total. Meanwhile, the trade revenue of domestic economic sector reached $ 26.4 billion, down by 2.8 per cent year – on – year and accounted for 34.7 per cent.

In the first 3 months of this year, the export turnover of domestic economic sector decreased by 2.2 per cent or $ 260 million to $ 11.49 billion while that of FDI sector increased by 10.8 per cent or $ 2.65 billion to nearly $ 27.28 billion. 

The import value of domestic economic sector decreased by 3.3 per cent or $ 512 million to $ 14.92 billion in the first 3 months while that of FDI sector decreased by 4.5 per cent or $ 1.06 billion to $ 22.49 billion.

Major import and export markets

At the end of the first quarter of this year, the bilateral trade exchange between Vietnam and America increased by 10.7 per cent  to $ 13.35 billion.

Meanwhile, the total trade exchange between Vietnam and Asia reached $ 49.26 billion, down by 1.8 per cent and accounted for 64.7 per cent of the country’s total trade revenue. 

The trade with Europe reached  $ 11.17 billion, up by 4.6 per cent; with Oceania - $ 1.39 billion, up by 0.2 per cent; and with Africa - $ 1.02 billion, down by 6.3 per cent.

The U.S was the country’s leading export market in the first 3 months of this year with the export turnover of $ 7.9 billion, up by 11.1 per cent year – on – year.  The country’s export of cell phones and accessories; textiles and garments; and footwear of all kinds to the U.S saw increases of 62.6 per cent; 7.4 per cent; and 11.4 per cent, respectively over the same period last year.

EU ranked second with the export turnover of $ 7.5 billion, up by 9.3 per cent. The country’s export of cell phones and accessories to the EU was up by 5.6 per cent; that of textiles and garments to EU – up by 10.7 per cent; and footwear of all kinds  - up by 17.7 per cent.

The country’s export of goods to China reached $ 3.9 billion in the first 3 months of this year, up by 8.2 per cent. The export of fruits and vegetables to China was up by 72.8 per cent; that of cell phones and accessories – up by 77.1 per cent.

The exports to South Korea reached $ 2.4 billion, up by 31.5 per cent.  

In the first quarter of this year, the country’s export of goods to ASEAN and Japan down by 9.9 per cent and 0.4 per cent to $ 4.2 billion and $ 3.2 billion, respectively.
