Vietnam index falls 0.5 pct, BaoViet down on flood expense

 Tuesday, August 4,2015

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's benchmark VN Index.VNI fell 0.49 percent by midday on Tuesday, led by large-caps including top insurer BaoViet Holdings , which was hurt by an increase in flood-related costs.

Heavy rains in northern Vietnam that inundated major coal mines over the past week have piled up expenses for BaoViet and prompted investors to offload BVH shares, which dropped 4.29 percent to near a one-month low.

But many mid-cap shares rebounded from Monday's sell-off after the latest round of Pacific trade talks, which experts said would benefit Vietnam widely, concluded without a deal at the weekend, against market expectation.

Analysts said the rallies would be short and the index, which hit its one-month low in the previous session, would further retreat to as low as 600 points.

Here is a snapshot of the VN Index.VNI at midday (0431 GMT).
