Imports of wheat from U.S increased sharply in first two months

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, the total imports of goods from the US market in the first 2 months of 2020 grew by 18.66 per cent to reach 2.18 billion USD. In which, there were 4 groups of item with a turnover of hundreds of millions USD and many groups of items saw a strong increase.

Computers, electronic products and components was leading in the import value in the first 2 months of 2020, accounted for 33.3 per cent of the total market share with 726.38 million USD, up by 32.48 per cent over the same period last year, increased  by 121.45 per cent in February of 2020 compared to the previous month; then cotton of all kinds with 145.42 million USD in February and for the first 2 months of the year, the import value this group of items increased by 1.36 per cent compared to the same period reached last year with 211.1 million USD, accounting for 9.68 per cent of the total market share.

Among the items with the import value of tens of millions USD, it is noteworthy that the wheat had a sudden increase in both quantity and value. In February of 2020, Vietnam did not import wheat from the US market. However, the import volume reached 36,073 tons in January, brought the country’s total wheat imports in the first two months 10.37 million USD, up by 113 times compared with the same period last year.

In addition, a number of other items also had strong growth in import value in the first two months of the year such as: iron and steel scrap increased by 116.96 per cent to reach 35.9 million USD; milk and milk products increased by 328.57 per cent to reach 28.96 million USD; other products from oil increased by 305.75 per cent to 7.88 million USD; other common metals increased by 169.78 per cent to 4.88 million USD; electric wires and cables increased by 179.79 per cent to 3.47 million, etc.
Vietnam also reduced imports of some groups of goods, leading to a decline in turnover such as textile, garment, leather and footwear materials by 14.09 per cent; animal feed and raw materials decreased by 56.79 per cent; CBU cars down by 74.93 per cent; telephones and accessories decreased by 76.26 per cent; tobacco materials decreased by 86.5 per cent.
