Vietnam’s exports and imports of seafood in first 2 months of 2020

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first two months of 2020, Vietnam’s exports of seafood fell compared with the same period last year, according to the figures of the General Department of Customs.

Meanwhile, the country’s imports of seafood saw year – on – year decrease.

Vietnam’s exports of seafood in the first two months of 2020
Vietnam's seafood exports in the first 2 months of 2020 reached nearly 988.81 million USD, down by 10.9 per cent compared to the first 2 months of 2019.
According to the preliminary statistics figure of the General Department of Customs, after a continuous decline in 3 months (in November of 2019 it decreased by 8.3 per cent, in December 2019 it continued to decrease by 5.3 per cent, and in January of 2020 it sharply decreased by 32.2 per cent), in February of 2020, the seafood exports increased slightly by 1.9 per cent to 501.07 million USD. Generally, the country's seafood exports in the first two months of 2020 reached nearly 988.81 million USD, down by 10.9 per cent compared to the first two months of 2019.

Leading seafood export markets in the first two months of 2020
There were 3 markets with the export turnover of over 100 million USD in the first 2 months of the year, including the USA, EU, Japan; in which, the exports to Japan reached 184.69 million USD, accounting for 18.7 per cent of the country's total seafood export turnover, up by over 2.5 per cent over the same period of 2019. Meanwhile the export to the US reached 179.51 million USD, accounting for 18.2 per cent, increasing by 0.9 per cent. The EU accounted for 14.5 per cent, reaching 143.67 million USD, down by 10.9 per cent.

In general, in the first 2 months of this year, Vietnam’s seafood exports to most markets decreased in turnover over the same period last year, of which the exports dropped sharply in some markets such as Mexico, down by 53.1 per cent, only reached 13.36 million USD; China decreased by 49.3 per cent, reaching 61.44 million USD; Iraq decreased by 45.8 per cent, reaching 0.75 million USD; Switzerland decreased by 39.6 per cent, reaching 2.14 million USD.
However, the exports still increased sharply in some markets such as: Indonesia increased by 767.3 per cent, reaching 0.44 million USD; Cambodia increased by 217 per cent, reaching 10.68 million USD; Romania increased by 48.8 per cent to reach 1.54 million USD.

Vietnam’s imports of seafood in the first two months of 2020
According to the preliminary statistics of the General Department of Customs, Vietnams’ imports of seafood in February of 2020 increased by 14,9% compared to January 2020 and also increased by 25.9% compared to February 2019 to reach 135.33 million USD, according to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
In the first 2 months of 2020, imports of seafood reached 253.89 million USD, down by 3.9 per cent over the same period of 2019, accounting for 0.7 per cent of the country’s total import value.

Leading seafood import markets in the first two months of 2020
In the period, India has become the leading supplier of seafood to Vietnam, accounting for 15.6 per cent of the total import turnover, reaching 39.64 million USD, up 38.3 per cent compared to the same period of 2019. In February of 2020 alone, the country’s imports of seafood from India reached 18.9 million USD, down by 7.9 per cent compared to January of 2020 but up sharply by 73.6 per cent compared to the same month of 2019.

The second largest market was Norway, accounting for 12 per cent of the total turnover, reaching 30.46 million USD, down by 0.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2019; of which in February of 2020 alone, the imports of seafood from Norway reached 15.54 million USD, up by 5.6 per cent compared to January of 2020 and up by10.8 per cent compared to February of 2019.
Meanwhile, the imports from Indonesia in February of 2020 increased by 12.4 per cent compared to January of 2020 and increased sharply by 118.9 per cent compared to February of 2019, reaching 14.11 million USD; bringing the total import value in the first 2 months to nearly 27.14 million USD, accounting for 10.7 per cent of the total import value and up by 33.1 per cent over the same period last year.

In February of this year, the country’s imports of seafood from Japan also increased sharply by 41.9 per cent compared to January of 2020 and by 13.1 per cent compared to February of 2019, reaching 13.75 million USD; bringing the total import value in the first 2 months to 23.48 million USD, accounting for 9.3 per cent of the total import value and up by 8.5 per cent over the same period of 2019.
In the first 2 months of this year, there were several markets that have increased sharply over the same period in 2019: the imports from Malaysia, up by 144.1 per cent to 1.83 million USD; from Poland increased by 38.7 per cent, reaching 0.91 million USD; from Canada increased by 37.3 per cent to 4.9 million USD; from Myanmar increased by 33.4 per cent to 0.69 million USD.
In contrast, the imports dropped sharply from the following markets: from Singapore decreased by 94.5 per cent reaching 0.08 million USD; from South Korea decreased by 52.5 per cent reaching 6.88 million USD; from England fell by 43.4 per cent reaching 2.45 million USD.
