Vietnam’s exports and imports of fruits and vegetables in first half of 2019

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first six months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of fruits and vegetables increased slightly over the same period last year, according to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.

However, the country’s imports of fruits and vegetables in the first half of this year increased sharply.

According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports in June of 2019 reached 2.04 billion USD, up by 2.5 per cent compared to the same period of 2018.

China was the main export market for Vietnamese vegetables and fruits, accounting for 71.5 per cent of the total fruit and vegetable export turnover of the country, reaching 1.46 billion USD, down slightly by 1 per cent over the same period of 2018.
EU was the second largest market, with the export turnover of 73.1 million USD, accounting for 3.6 per cent of the total, rising strongly by 33.9 per cent. The next was the market of Southeast Asian countries reached 70.16 million USD, down by 12.2 per cent over the same period last year. Meanwhile, the exports to the US market increased by 13.3 per cent, reaching 70.15 million USD, accounting for 3.4 per cent; the exports to South Korea also increased by 12.2 per cent, reaching 65.14 million USD, accounting for 3.2 per cent.

In general, export of fruits and vegetables to most markets in the first 6 months of this year increased in value compared to the same period of 2018. The exports to several markets increased strongly such as: to Indonesia - increased by 339 per cent to 1.26 million USD; to Italy - increased by 208 per cent to 6.43 million USD; to Laos - increased by 161.8 per cent to 12.46 million USD; to Hong Kong - increased by 133.3 per cent to 23.55 million USD.

Vietnam’s imports of fruits and vegetables increased sharply
According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in the first 6 months of 2019, the total fruit and vegetable import value of Vietnam reached 990.23 million USD (equivalent to 22,775 billion dong), up by 34.6 per cent over the same period last year.
Chinese and Thai vegetables and fruits are still massively entering Vietnam even in the middle of the peak season of Vietnamese fruits. On average, Vietnamese people spend over VND 127 billion a day to buy and use imported vegetables and fruits. Currently, the country’s imports of fruits and vegetables from Thailand and China reached over 627.79 million USD, accounting for 63.4 per cent of the total import value of vegetables and fruits of the whole country.

Vietnam’s imports of fruits and vegetables from Thailand reached 407.66 million USD in the first six months of this year, up by 22.3 per cent over the same period of 2018. Meanwhile, the imports of fruits and vegetables from China reached 220.13 million USD, up by 53.8 per cent.
The imports of fruits and vegetables from the US market in the first 6 months of this year also increased strongly by 70 per cent compared to the same period last year, reaching 116.37 million USD; while the imports from Australia increased by 38.4 per cent to 57.64 million USD.
