Vietnam – Malaysia trade exchange increased over 17% in 9 months
Thursday, October 18,2018AsemconnectVietnam - The bilateral trade exchange between Vietnam and Malaysia totaled US$8.6 billion in the first nine months of this year, up by 17.1 per cent over the same period last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
Meanwhile, the country’s imports of goods from Malaysia reached $5.6 billion, up by 34.2 per cent over the same period last year. So in the first nine months of this year, Vietnam got $2.5 billion of deficit in trade exchange with Malaysia.
In the period, the country’s imports of petroleum of all kinds reached 2.7 million tons worth of $1.7 billion, up by 38.6 per cent in quantity and 88.6 per cent in value year – on – year; computers, electronics and components – over $929.2 million, up by 19.51 per cent; machines, equipment and spare parts - $591.3 million, up by 31.61 per cent; ordinary metals - $256.9 million, up by 69.33 per cent.
However, the country’s imports of pharmaceuticals from Malaysia fell by 73.6 per cent; fragrant, cosmetics and hygiene products – down by 32.06 per cent; means of transport and spare parts – down by 47.84 per cent.
Also in the first nine months of this year, Vietnam’s exports of telephones and components to Malaysia reached $446.5 million; computers, electronics and components - $553.8 million; iron and steel of all kinds - $330.6 million; rice - $203.9 million; glass and products - $200.4 million; machines, equipment and spare parts - $144.3 million; means of transport and spare parts - $131.5 million.
In the period, the country’s exports of crude oil to Malaysia fell by 83.87 per cent in quantity and 78.07 per cent in value to 79,100 tons worth of $42.2 million; but the exports of iron and steel – up by 76.57 per cent in quantity and 98.96 per cent in value to 478,100 tons worth of $330.6 million, up by 12.68 per cent; and wood and furniture - $78.9 million, up by over 2 times or 109.81 per cent.
Malaysia is now the 8th biggest investor in Vietnam. By June of 2018, Malaysia had 577 projects in Vietnam with the total capital of over $12 billion. Within ASEAN, Malaysia is the second biggest trade partner of Vietnam after Thailand.
