Imports of animal feed and materials in first five months

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam imported US$ 341 million worth of animal feed and materials in May, decreased slightly by 2.51 per cent over the previous month but increased sharply by 34.05 per cent over the same month of last year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.

In May of this year, Vietnam’s imports of animal feed and materials from Argentina reached $ 93 million in April, decreased sharply by 41.92 per cent compared with the previous month and by 35.06 per cent over the same month of last year. The figure brought the country’s total imports of animal feed and materials from Argentina in the first five months of this year to over $ 578 million, down by 8.43 per cent year – on – year and accounted for 35.9 per cent of the total.

It was followed by Brazil with over $ 76 million in May, up by 162.83 per cent month – on – month and by 159.52 per cent over the same month of last year. The figure brought the country’s total imports of animal feed and materials from Brazil in the first five months of this year to over $ 185 million, up by 345.48 per cent year – on – year.
 
Meanwhile, the imports animal feed and materials from the U.S reached over $ 57 million in May, up by 11.57 per cent month – on – month and by 711.07 per cent year – on – year. The total imports of animal feed and materials from the U.S in the first five months of this year reached over $ 254 million, increased by 58.18 per cent year – on – year. 

Besides, the country also imported animal feed and materials from China, India, Taiwan and Indonesia with the import value of $ 17 million; $ 10.6 million; $ 10.5 million; and $ 7.3 million, respectively.
 
In the first five months of this year, Vietnam spent over $ 1.6 billion on importing animal feed and materials, up by 11.73 per cent over the same period last year.

In the period, the country’s imports of animal feed and materials from Brazil reached $ 185 million, increased sharply by 345.48 per cent; from Belgium - $ 15 million, up by 168.43 per cent; from the U.S – over $ 254 million, up by 58.18 per cent; and  from South Korea – over $ 19 million, up by 45.77 per cent year – on – year.

Wheat:
 Vietnam’s imports of wheat were estimated at 735,000 tons worth of $ 173 million in May and over 2.4 million tons worth of $ 578 million in the first 5 months of this year, increased by 14.34 per cent in quantity and by 30.81 per cent in value compared with the same period of 2017.

The leading wheat import markets in the first 5 months of this year were Russia with the market share of 50 per cent; Australia – 25 per cent; Canada – 8 per cent; the U.S – 5 per cent and Brazil – 3 per cent of the total.

In the first 5 months of this year, the imports of wheat from Russia increased by 22 times in quantity and over 20 times in value, while the imports from the U.S increased by 21 times in quantity and over 24 times in value.

Soybean: 
Vietnam’s imports of soybean reached 158,000 tons worth of over $ 70 million in May and over 720,000 tons worth of $ 312 million in the first 5 months of this year, decreased by 1.46 per cent in quantity and 2.72 per cent in value compared with the same period of 2017.

Corn:
 The imports of corn reached 1 million tons worth of $ 215 million in May and 4 million tons worth of $ 811 million in the first 5 months of this year, increased by 32.3 per cent in quantity and 29.85 per cent in value compared with the same period of 2017.

Argentina and Brazil were the leading soybean import markets of Vietnam in the first 5 months of this year with 63 per cent and 11.6 per cent of the total market share, respectively.
Especially, in the first 5 months of this year, the imports of corn from Thailand decreased sharply, both in quantity and in value compared with the same period last year.
