Vietnam claims first bronze at World Para Swimming Championships
Monday, December 4,2017AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnamese athlete Vo Thanh Tung brought home the first bronze in the men’s 100m freestyle-S5 with a time of 1’19.56” at the World Para Swimming Championships 2017 opened in Mexico City on December 2.
A representative from the Vietnamese sport delegation told Vietnam News Agency’s correspondents in Mexico that Tung is expected to gain higher position in his categories of strength, which are the men’s 50m backstroke-S5 and 50m freestyle-S5 on December 4-5.
Earlier, Tung won a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle in the world championships in Scotland two years ago. In the Paralympics 2016 in Brazil, Tung claimed the silver in the same category.
Meanwhile, Trinh Thi Bich Nhu will compete in the women’s 100m breastroke-SB5 on December 3. She won silver in the world championships in 2015.
Five Vietnamese swimmers, namely Vo Thanh Tung, Nguyen Thanh Trung, Trinh Thi Bich Nhu, Tran Quoc Phi and Do Thanh Hai are participating in the World Para Swimming Championships 2017.
The same day, the World Para Powerlifting Championships kicked off in Mexico City. Six Vietnamese athletes will vie for medals in the men’s 49k, 54kg, 59kg, and 65kg categories and the women’s 50kg and 55kg classes.
The events drew athletes from 57 countries around the world.
